Boston / Wilmington Shriner's show - Nov. 5-7 - Net 54 meeting?

We're only a week and a half away from the best show New England has to offer - the annual Shriner's show. Let's hope it has some good offerings and not just the overpriced in-person version of eBay's BIN section.

(Website is never that great, but here it is anyways...)

http://www.gbscc.com/convention.html

We've typically done a Net 54 meet-up the past couple of years, typically around noon on Saturday near the bar in the food / autograph area.

Who's up for meeting up again this year? I plan on being there and hope to see many friendly faces again!

Scott

If I make it to the show I'm up for meeting. Last year I went to the regular snack bar and waited awhile. I didn't even know there's a snack bar in the bar area.

Maybe I should drink more and look at cards less?

Scott, I'll be there with bells on! Noon on Saturday. :D

I am yet to attend this show but would be interested. Is there a Mansfield show that is annual first weekend in Nov?
Thanks,

aelefson 10-26-2010 07:17 PM

Hi-
I will be there too! Nameless, there is a show in Mansfield MA almost every month. I believe the next one is scheduled Thanksgiving weekend (not sure of the day). There is usually two or three tables with prewar, and several more with pre 1970, so it is a show worth attending.

The next Mansfield show is Sun Nov 14th---Terry O'Reilly is guest signer.

Hey Ted, look forward to seeing you again!

I think there's just the one bar / snack area. I think the last couple of times, we've met up just inside the dining area, if you walk from where they sell the hot dogs / burgers, and walk into the adjoining room where the autograph signings take place, let's all shoot to meet up at the bar area just as you walk into that room.

On-site grading

I got the postcard for this event today and it says they'll be doing on site grading. I know that in the past they've taken submissions, but it sounds like they're going to provide full service grading on site now, which is great!

Can anyone verify this?

GoldenAge50s 10-30-2010 01:52 PM

Erich--

SGC will be offering their "Quick Grade" consultation, but not complete onsite grading---Derek Grady & Scott H. are both going to be there so I understand.

GoldenAge50s 11-01-2010 12:02 PM

Just got a notice that Beckett will be grading on-site for this show.

THANKS!!!!

New to the area and would love to check out the local shows. I'll be at Shriner's which a board member recommended me to and the one in Mansfield. Maybe we will see some boxing :)

I might be there Friday but I do not know what time yet. Are you going for the opening?

Thanks,

Bingo - it's pretty easy off Route 93 - I think it's Exit 39C offhand but not positive of that...

Looking forward to seeing you guys tomorrow!

You never know WHAT sort of hat Levi will be wearing, so don't speak too soon!

ubiqty 11-05-2010 07:31 AM

I'll be there from 3-5 on Saturday on my way to the Bruins game.
Looking for high grade e90-1 cards and Dummy Hoy and Dummy Taylor items.

Scott (ubiqty)

aelefson 11-05-2010 08:05 AM

I will be there today and tomorrow. I am short, fat, and I have a large moustache and goatee, so I should be easy to recognize. I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Alan

Alan, did you go to the George Costanza school of describing yourself??

I'll pull a Costanza and do the complete opposite of Alan - I'm tall, thin and have no facial hair. If it's clean, I'll rock my E95 Cicotte Sox t-shirt again!

nameless 11-05-2010 09:12 AM

Leaving now

Houston Texans hat on. I'll be there for the opening. First time at this show looking forward to it.

nameless 11-05-2010 01:09 PM

was okay....

Not much 19th century.... saw a few people get riped off. A John L. Sullivan n310 SGC 20 they wanted 1350 for it. A bit high. Had some stuff that was reasonable not 19th century but not right for my collection. Was fun though.

Republicaninmass 11-05-2010 02:37 PM

not all bad, some deals in the works, picked up some easy auto'd 52 topps, not too many t3's or t9's

aelefson 11-05-2010 04:15 PM

The show was excellent as usual for me both with buying and selling! JJ, were you looking for nineteenth century boxing? The nineteenth century baseball offerings were plentiful and incredible as usual.

Decent selection

Just got home from the show. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of cards that were available. I had skipped the show the last two years after not finding anything for a few years.

I was able to pick up another Chief Meyers colored S74 and a Ira Thomas Domino Disc.

There were a few new vintage dealers that I had not met previously.

Hi,

A very impressive show as usual. I managed to pick up 2 -1922 W573 Uncut Strip cards - 10 Cards per strip w/ Hornsby, Collins, Bancroft & Schalk. Also a Minty 1910 P2 Sweet Caporal Pin Ty Cobb, a very nice 1927 Grover Alexander Exhibit Card, some impressive 1931 W517 examples including Ted Lyons, 2 - Lefty Groves, Eddie Collins & Al Simmons. This show resembles what the Philly Show used to be, unfortunately it is only once a year. The spring version of this show really isn't the same thing and wasn't nearly as good.

I wish I had more time to spend since 6 hours really wasn't enough. Also kind of strange that the food concessions closed around 4:00 pm. Not really possible to go out and eat then come back since the convention center is in an industrial park.

I wish I had time to go back on Saturday since this easily is a 2 day show to thoroughly go everything that there is to see. Just a note that there also seems to be much more vintage boxing cards and memorabilia at dealer's tables so I am thinking there may be an increase in popularity in that area. A highly recommended show.

scooter729 11-07-2010 08:52 AM

Great to catch up with many friends at the show yesterday - not much buying for me (although I now regret passing on a T219 Jack Johnson - and I agree with Mike's post above about seeing more boxing memorabilia - Jimmy will be happy!).

I guess the lack of buying just means more money to spend on the next auction that comes up!

wolterse 11-07-2010 02:39 PM

Show

Great to see everyone yesterday. I thought the show was solid and on a much higher level than April's show. No baseball pickups for me. Actually found a beautiful Abe Lincoln cabinet (thx Jimmy) and got some civil war news - these fit in well with my recent reading and interest in the civil war!

I'm moving to DC in February so that was my last Shriners for the foreseeable future. Look forward to meeting my DC area net54 members next Spring!

I will miss my friends from New England very much!

That t219 Johnson was a bit overprices. Was disappointed to see such a lack of 19 century boxing. Was fun got to submit some cards to SGC.

Shriner's Show was a good time

Just wanted to say that the Shriner's show was a great time. Got to meet several Net54 members for the first time and that made my day. Friendliest bunch of guys and will make sure I attend again next year for the Net54 meeting. Loved Erich's Abe Lincoln cabinet and the member with a gigantic football trophy(sorry I don't remember your name) was great fun. Went there for some 63 topps baseball cards but found myself stopping at many tables with vintage cards and other items that I see here on this site so often. Think I'm getting a bug for things vintage as they have a real appeal to me for their beauty and history. Tom Zappala was there and I chatted with him a bit about his book "The T206 Collection". Best regards to all the members here at this wonderful and informative site. Jim

Republicaninmass 11-07-2010 09:36 PM

Sorry I missed you guys on Saturday I was about an hour late. I had an excellent show, sold some stuff, picked up a few items, and made some new friends. Also, submitted a handful of cards to Psa, Sgc, and even had Beckett look at some shiny stuff I had been lucky enough to pull out of packs this year. There was a deal or two to be had!
