1888 Goodwin & Co. cabinet question
4 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone,
I just picked up these two 1888 Goodwin & Co. cabinet cards of Sam Moffet (Indianapolis) and John Doran (Omaha). Does anyone know if these are the same poses used for the Old Judge N172 cards? Moffet is card #335(a) and Doran is card #132(a). Here are the photos. Thanks in advance. Howard |
Your Doran has been discussed before though a long time ago. Some have opined that they are "proofs" but the consensus is that they are "reprints" from original plates used for N172. I think they should be dated to the very early 1900's.

I agree with Steve. The Doran is a very rare N172, but when the find of glass plate negatives surfaced he became a common large format image. Those are not original Goodwin products but photos that were printed from the glass plates at some later date.

Barry and Steve are correct. These were probably not printed to deceive, just to display images that were not displayable as a glass plate negative. They were most probably printed in the early-1900s and have a value of about $250-$500 each.

Thanks!
Thanks guys for the fast responses. On the bottom of the Moffet cabinet there is the name of the company & their address (Rogers, 787 Chapel Street, New Haven Conn.) and I have sent the New Haven CT Free Public Library an email asking if they could give me any info on that company (Rogers). It would be great to see when they went out of business and that might give me a timeline of when the Moffet cabinet was made. The library is closed Saturday & Sunday so maybe Monday I can get an answer. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

Howard--I'm afrraid that dating the mount will tell you nothing other than that they were made after that date. The photos were simply attached to anything available. Some were glued to black cardboard, some to old mounts.

Thanks oldjudge. I didn't know they just attached the photos on anything available. You learn something new everyday.
