OT: Two "T206 Players" mentioned in ESPN article today
Ichiro got hit number 200, breaking Willie Keeler's record of consecutive 200 hit seasons and Ty Cobb's career American League 200 hit seasons record.

When you add the hits he got in Japan, Ichiro has over 3500 professional hits, and he is still going strong at not quite 37. If he remains healthy 4000 is within reach.

started playing MLB at age 27 ... who has the most hits from age 27-on?
|
Pete Rose has the most professional hits, 4256 + 427 = 4683
Ty Cobb is next, 4191 + 211 = 4402 Aaron, 3771 + 324 = 4095 Those three were almost predictable. 4th place is in part due to those nice long PCL seasons, but a fella still had to be able to hit. Jigger Statz 737 + 3356 = 4093 Mr. Musial is 5th, 3630 + 371 = 4001 Speaker and Beckley, two T206 guys, each have 3906, they're tied for 6th 11th is Spencer Harris. 94 + 3617 = 3711 15th, Harry Strohm 0 + 3486 = 3486 17th, Ed Hock, 1 + 3474 = 3475 18th, Willie Mays, 3283 + 179 = 3462. I think Ichiro has a shot at 3000 major league hits, but not a lock on it. He might get to 4000 professional hits. And I see no way he gets to 4000 major league hits. |
Nice numbers Frank.
I believe he is at 2230 major league hits with a week to go in his 10th season. His ten season average is of course 223 hits per year (and will probably be 224 per at season's end). Has anyone ever averaged so many hits over a ten-year span? Maybe Cobb or Hornsby, but nobody else. Wade Boggs also comes to mind. |
Ichiro is amazing and fun to watch. He is a base hit machine. I can imagine that he's the closest thing to what Keeler was like on the field.

Here are the best ten year totals for five great players, with 10 hits added to Ichiro's to finish out this season:
Suzuki 2240 Hornsby 2085 Rose 2067 Cobb 2003 Boggs 1980 It's not even close! |
top
ichiro knows where to 'hit 'em where they ain't'.
gotta love that keeler! best, barry |
2000 hits in a decade
Quote:
Ichiro: 2230+ (2001-2010) Hornsby: 2085 (1920-1929) Sisler: 2080 (1919-1928) Waner: 2074 (1927-1938) Rose: 2067 (1968-1977) Musial: 2056 (1943-1952) Simmons: 2005 (1925-1934) Cobb: 2003 (1908-1917) |
Erick- I should have thought of Sisler, but I wouldn't have guessed Waner.

Developed a real respect for Ichiro, after this:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4329684 He showed a touch of class, that is not much in evidence, today. |
