O/T trivia

Name a team (postwar) that had on its roster in a single season a 300 game winner, 3 200 game winners, and 4 150 game winners. In case it is not clear, this is 8 total pitchers, no overlap.

scooter729 09-18-2010 07:51 AM

Without looking, I think it was one of the Dodgers teams around '65-'66, with Koufax, Drysdale, Sutton and Claude Osteen, if I remember right...

matthew 09-19-2010 01:10 PM

anyone?

C'mon, does no one know? I had a couple guesses, but checked & I was wrong. Very anxious to see the answer.

Peter_Spaeth 09-19-2010 03:04 PM

Will give it until tomorrow .... not even any guesses except one...

howard38 09-19-2010 03:39 PM

Had they all already won that many games or had some of them not yet reached the mark?

Peter_Spaeth 09-19-2010 04:21 PM

Not yet reached --- career totals.

Anthony S. 09-19-2010 04:54 PM

1978 Dodgers

Sutton 324

John 288
Hough 216
Welch 211

Sutcliffe 171
Stewart 168
Rhoden 151
Hooton 151

Peter_Spaeth 09-19-2010 05:08 PM

yowza

Rob D. 09-19-2010 05:20 PM

Darn, Peter, I was hoping for a "That's not the answer I'm looking for" response.

The best trivia questions have multiple answers, even when there's only one answer.

Peter_Spaeth 09-19-2010 05:55 PM

OK here's one, a team with a 300 game winner and 4 200 game winners.

Kawika 09-19-2010 06:41 PM

1990 Rangers: Ryan plus Brown, Rogers, Hough, Moyer

RichardSimon 09-20-2010 07:51 AM

Ok, name the first all black outfield.

I know that one (I think.)

1951 World Series. Giants. Mays, Irvin, and Hank Thompson.

David W 09-20-2010 08:39 AM

Who has the highest lifetime batting average of all players who played in at least 500 games?

Peter_Spaeth 09-20-2010 08:42 AM

Is this a trick question and it's not Cobb?

Not Cobb. This guy hit .397 lifetime

BleedinBlue 09-21-2010 11:27 AM

It used to be...

Terry Forster.

But, since then Roberto Hernandez finished up his career with a .500 batting average (1/2) in 1010 games. I think there was one other guy who finsihed 1/1 in his career that beats Hernandez.

Interesting, I didn't know about Roberto Hernandez, but Forster is who I was thinking of

barrysloate 09-21-2010 01:20 PM

Over 16 seasons Forster was 31 for 78, for a batting average of .397. That's not easy to do.

Peter_Spaeth 09-21-2010 06:27 PM

The questions said 500 games or more. I am assuming it is whoever has the highest batting average according to the recent Negro League statistics project which compiled partial statistics based on verifiable box scores. Judy Johnson maybe?

brickyardkennedy 09-21-2010 06:39 PM

Terry Forster played in 620 games. So he does fit the question.

What is most surprising to me is that Hough had more career wins than Hooton and Rhoden, two top pitchers of their era.

Wow. Great trivia question!

scooter729 09-22-2010 06:52 AM

A bit O/T but a question which I thought was pretty interesting when I just heard it, so I'll toss it out to keep the trivia going....

Four colleges who can claim a Super Bowl winning QB and a US President as their graduates. One of the schools had two QB’s.

Name the school, QB and President.

Peter_Spaeth 09-22-2010 07:46 AM

Stanford -- Herbert Hoover and Jim Plunkett. I know Gerald Ford went to Michigan but I can't think of any Michigan QB who won the Heisman.

HRBAKER 09-22-2010 07:56 AM

West Point - Eisenhower/Staubach

Right on Stanford; any other QB's go there?

And there WAS a QB from Michigan...

Yes to Staubach, no to the school / president though. Close.

No...

jthorst75 09-22-2010 08:11 AM

Staubach went to Annapolis (Navy) and Jimmy Carter. Stanford had both Elway and Plunkett as QBs and Hoover. Also Tom Brady went to Michigan and Gerald Ford too.

Jim VB 09-22-2010 08:15 AM

Roethlisberger and Benjamin Harrison.

jthorst75 09-22-2010 08:18 AM

Both Big Bens from Miami (OH). Harrison and Rothlesberger

HRBAKER 09-22-2010 08:21 AM

Academy schmademy, sorry about the wrong school, I was in the neighborhood. My apologies to all Annapolis grads. :D

Damn it Peter! Pay attention! Heisman wasn't mentioned in this question. (However, after reading your post, I completely forgot the real question and was racking my brain for Heisman winners/Presidents!) You sucked me right in!

:D

:D

That'll learn me to multitask whilst reading the Board. Sorry gents.

Peter_Spaeth 09-22-2010 08:55 AM

Hoover/Plunkett and Carter/Staubach would also work IF the question had been Heisman winners. Several presidents went to Yale and without cheating I have a vague memory from somewhere that early on a Yale quarterback won the Heisman.

scooter729 09-22-2010 09:47 AM

You guys got 'em all...

Stanford - Elway / Plunkett as QB's, Hoover as Prez
Michigan - Brady as QB, Ford as Prez
Miami (OH) - Roethlisberger as QB, B. Harrison as Prez
Navy - Staubach as QB, Carter as Prez

David W 09-22-2010 10:30 AM

Who am I?

I thought I had the world by the tail, in my major league debut at age 18
I went 3 for 3 with 2 walks,scored 4 runs, and drove in 3.

Then I got hurt, and watched my 2 younger brothers play in the major leagues, while I never played again.

HRBAKER 09-22-2010 10:48 AM

Tom Paciorek's brother Jim?

edhans 09-22-2010 10:56 AM

O/T trivia

I think it was John Paciorek.

HRBAKER 09-22-2010 11:08 AM

I'm having a rough day, Army/Navy - Jim/John.
