SI article Cobb vs Lajoie 1910
Sports Illustrated, 9/20/2010, has an interesting article about the famous race for the 1909 batting title race between Ty Cobb and Napoleon Lajoie. The article has pictures of two T-206's, Cobb portrait with red background and the Lajoie with bat.
I enjoyed the article, but evidently author, L. Jon Wertheim missed the recent Ty Cobb/Al Stump discussion on net54baseball.com He refers to Stump's biography at least three times. He even repeats the shotgun story. Will truth in history ever overcome Stump's sickening hatch job and exploitation of Cobb? |
Great article; I was happy to come across it while I was riding the bus this morning on the way in to work. I knew most of the story, but there were some aspects I hadn't heard before, such as the St. Louis manager who positioned his 3rd baseman so far back to allow Lajoie to continue bunting and go 8-for-8 was eventually banned from baseball (although he popped up in the Federal Leagues later).
I always hope articles such as this one in mainstream publications will continue to spur interest in vintage baseball. |
