Need Help Identifying Wagner Photo.
 

Hello all,

I am not exactly sure what this photograph is but I know it is possibly from Carl Horner. It is the famous T206 pose, but what gets me is the size of it. I would say it is approx 8 x 10 inches itself and the total size including the frame is approx 16 X 14. It is inside an old frame as you can see from the pictures. I know that the Carl Horner cabinets measure about 5 1/2 x 7 inches long. It has some wear and almost looks like it is starting to flake and has what appears to be some heat damage as well. Just curious as to what this might be. Very interesting piece but I am just not quite sure. Thought I would get some feedback. Thanks.

Tell us more about where you obtained this....first thing I'd do is a black light test. Doesn't look right to me.

I think a dead give away is the number 19 on the mat. at the time that photo was taken players did not have numbers on their jersey's and he was retired by 1919 so it should not be a date. I agree looks like a fake that some is trying to make look like a period piece with the framing.

The piece was at an auction that brought $1450 plus juice. I was just curious as to what it was. It didnt look right to me either, but I never saw a photo that big for a cabinet card. Thanks.

Estate Auction that I was present at. Auctioneer would not take it out of the frame or even attempt to remove the back of the frame to view the back of the photo. That was strange to me but they had their reasons i guess.

I think you should always be able to at least access the back of a photo on a piece like this. One of the reasons I usually always stay away from framed "vintage" photos.

There was a huge boxing auction back in the mid-90's. I think it was the Duke Hott collection. If I'm remembering correctly I think the auction company who handled the collection nearly went bankrupt because they bought it outright and grossly overpaid for it.

Anyways, there was a lot of great stuff in this auction. Unfortunately there also ended up being a lot of bogus stuff. Mostly of the vintage large format photo variety. A lot of experienced collectors and dealers realized they got burned when they started removing the photos from the frames and getting a better look at them. They turned out to be mostly later generation photos and reprints.

What was the 1921 Babe Ruth card they had listed and what did it sell for?

What did the other baseball items go for?
