So, trimmed cards now grade?

I hate posting this because the guy has a 100% feedback, but the Willard cards are trimmed yet graded:

timn1 09-14-2010 08:43 PM

that is ridiculous

Does PSA not know that Willard's are supposed to have wide white borders? They have the Roush listed as MC (miscut) -- ?!!?!?

Doug 09-14-2010 08:47 PM

Maybe the miscut (MC) qualifier includes trimmed cards now? What's good for the Willard is good for the Wagner (or the other way around)!

AndyG09 09-14-2010 08:47 PM

Amazing!

Seriously, what a joke. Love the (mc) designation. PSA rules.:D

Peter_Spaeth 09-14-2010 08:48 PM

A number of his offerings have almost no border and have no qualifiers.

Doug 09-14-2010 08:54 PM

For being "professional" authenticators you would think one of the job requirements would be to actually know what you are grading...

I was trying to give PSA the benefit of the doubt as W572s have much smaller borders then V100s and Rousch's cards re-use the image, so maybe they just mis-identified the issue, but the cropping and autograph on the V100 is different so the eBay one is clearly a trimmed V100.

Matthew H 09-14-2010 09:43 PM

I was wondering about those... I was interested. I gave PSA too much credit as I am not so familiar with the issue so after a little research came up empty, I assumed they were some kind of variation. :o

glenv 09-14-2010 10:14 PM

Maybe they aren't trimmed. Maybe they are just missing their mounts.

trimmed

as tim suggests, the Willards' characteristically have very wide white borders so one can only be astonished that the tiny bordered card was given a 3 mc.
i had my willard's Ryan framed for display largely because of the beauty of those wide white borders.

best,
barry

For the sake of comparison (not my card):

Sloppy/Negligent grading

Note that the Rice this seller has up for auction has full borders, and that PSA's serial number is just three digits away from the Roush, indicating that these were graded at the same time:

Unfriggingbelievable that this card would be given an MC grade. Now I've seen it all!

rhettyeakley 09-15-2010 10:34 AM

Obviously a mistake by the grading co.

Another set that has always been a bit of a pet-peeve when it comes to how they are graded is the E285 Rittenhouse set. These cards were made with extra extensions on the top and bottom borders but I don't know how many I have seen that have been graded numerically with these extensions either completely or partially trimmed off.

The Simmons below is an example of a trimmed card, while the George Davis is as issued...

I'm not bashing either company as I have seen the trimmed ones in both SGC & PSA holders.

It's easy to grade cards if you don't know what you're looking at . . .

Exhibitman 09-15-2010 12:06 PM

Unbelievable. The whole point of a PSA submission is that PSA is supposed to be an expert at authenticating and grading cards, as they say on their web site:

"PSA provides expert analysis and protection for your collectibles. Using state-of-the-art, proprietary methods, the hobby's most astute and knowledgeable grading experts render carefully considered, unbiased third-party opinions of grade. When you see a card/ticket in a holder displaying the PSA logo, you can be confident that the card/ticket has been properly authenticated and graded by the experts at Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA)."

"When you buy a PSA-graded collectible or submit an item to PSA for grading, you get the most accurately graded collectible in the hobby. You'll never have to rely on subjective opinions or the word of a seller."

So what happened to PSA's "astute and knowledgeable" graders? Did they forget to use their "state-of-the-art, proprietary methods" to grade the cards in question? Everyone's entitled to a mistake, but when you make enough of them on one order and they are egregious enough, perhaps the "experts at Professional Sports Authenticator" need to reconsider drinking tequila shots with lunch.

Matthew H 09-15-2010 12:33 PM

The seller stated that the cards were hand cut prior to issue. Is this accurate?

As far as PSA's "expertise", they have been consistently over grading my submissions lately. (New staff?) I just feel like it's cheapening their service.

glchen 09-15-2010 01:10 PM

FYI, my bids on some of these cards have been cancelled by the seller for the reason "Request from PSA due to grading concerns." Weird thing is the auctions are still continuing, and you can still place new bids.

Doug 09-15-2010 02:36 PM

Apparently eBay canceled the auction because I just clicked on the link and got the "this listing has been removed or the item is no longer available" screen.

Is it this thread's fault?

I'd better fix my hair... Wait, can they see me?

Exhibitman 09-15-2010 03:24 PM

I love how Ebay "unpersons" auctions when PSA bitches but not when the sellers blatantly shill.

Stupid Ebay...

Now where are my cards from yesterday's Ebay wins?

Maybe PSA should spend more time monitoring their graders to make sure they actually know what they are doing...
