T207 Red Cross Find of 6 Cards Including Lowdermilk
 

For those that don't frequent both boards, just curious if everyone heard of the T207 Red Cross find? There are AMAZING things out there. So much for the Chicago only theory.

Where were these cards found and are they new to the hobby?

Completely new to the hobby. Here's the story from the gentleman who owns them:

"I got these cards in Baton Rouge ~ 1940 from my grandmother's storage/attic whatever. They came from my uncle who died in ~ 1936. They were in my mothers attic, she died in 1992 and I found them again after those years. I do plan to put in auction or something. I'm 81 yrs old and not a collector."

Apparently there are 90 additional cards in the find. Wonder if there are any Kottons, Minos, etc?

Wow a Lowdermilk T207 Red Cross. This about doubles the number of know Red Cross backs with this find, doesn't it?

That's a monumental find, as not only are the cards rare, but the first non-Chicago player has been found.

And it's six new ones, not five.

here we have an actual find to substatiate more than ever before, the use of the attic and dead relatives stories!!!

I hope they pop up in an auction soon. I'd love to have one of those Red Cross backs although I am sure the Lowdermilk will go through the roof! :(

Amazing find!!! I am glad to see Louisiana still produces some hidden treasures. Who knows what may be down there??

Crazy! I wonder how much of what is still stashed out there will never be seen again. Fire, flood, etc. certainly take away treasures without anyone knowing. Glad to see something almost literally come out of the woodwork.

When I partnered with 3 other people in the mid-80's to buy what what has been called the "Southern Find," the huge hoard of Series 2 and Series 3 Coupons from a guy in Louisiana, he mentioned that he "knew of a guy" who had a large stash of Victorys, but we never heard anything more and they never hit the market to my knowledge. The purchase we made consisted of multiple copies of every series 2 and series 3 card in great condition and I recall some Kottons and other cards in there also. There hadn't been much since coming from Louisiana in the way of "finds" until this one.

All you have to do to fund the purchase of the Loudermilk card is sell your Strasburg 1/1 card....oops, never mind. :-)

No doubt those 6 will hit an auction in the coming year. I wonder what values will be? Since there are 6 now known, will they go down, up, or stay the same? My guess is they will go down a little and the Lowdermilk will still be a big card...pushing 5 figures. Not sure what it does to this one either, but I am not too worried. As long as I collect it will not be on the market ;)....regards

I don't think the value will be adversely affected. Going from 6 to 12 may sound like a lot, but that's still a very small population and the T207 set is widely collected. And the Lowdermilk is going to go nuts.

As if the collection isn't great enough, did anyone notice the Miller, Chicago with the Anonymous back? That's not chopped liver. What a power-packed find this is.

Those are awesome T207's. Thanks for sharing. Very cool. The Anonymous back T207's are great cards, too.

For Brian (post #18), they are very significant because totally new finds of baseball cards that are unique are exciting to the pre-war collectors. These 6 T207's are 1-of-a-kind. No others with that back variety have ever been found. In a set from 1912 that is well-known, like T207, it is amazing to add any card variations to the master checklist.

At the National I remember speculating that the Red Crosses may not have originated in Louisiana. Guess this proves me wrong!

David- I bet those guys with the "rare" Strasburg cards are jumping off ledges today, now that he is going to have to have Tommy John surgery.

What a wonderful find this is, I thought I'd never see any more T213 Red Crosses discovered. I personally think the value of the cards already found will not decrease because of the new find, rather the new cards will be quickly absorbed by hobbyists or investors.

As a T207 collector, this find is extremely significant. I can echo Bruce's feelings. I thought I was almost done with the Lionel Carter additions.....

Beyond the Red Cross's, many other nice cards in the whole lot!

Jeez,

I thought I'd be able to bask in the victory of getting a red cross T207 from REA's May auction for a few years without seeing another one ... let alone 6 !!

But this is what makes the hobby great ... and that is one of the most important rareback finds in the history of the hobby. In a way it kind of reminds me of when 5 Ty Cobb backs were discovered at one time --- just craziness.

Looking forward to seeing these cards on the market.

This may not be the biggest find ever, but card for card it has to rank near the top.

i am looking at properties in bon temps, la as we speak. might be worth the investments and weirdos if i can make finds like this.

Quan, As a liquor store owner I always advised people who thought they had a drinking problem to go to Louisiana and then they would find out they did not have one. Don't know where Bon Temps is but I am sure they are having fun. If you struck out on cards as least it would be an adventure. oh the vampire thing, I get it. Incredible find, btw.

from the scans/owner's story the find is incredible. even the low grade wajo red cross looks impressive.

The "other site" is where the owner of the cards originally posted this find. I dont know if we are allowed to post the name of a "competitor" forum. I will leave that to the owner of this one.

i post on both sites (well there's actually 3..ssshhh :))...more vocal on the other one as they seem to tolerate my pain-in-the-ass style better, or maybe cuz it's a smaller audience. anyways both boards serve my hobby needs so i'm thankful for that.

Because the people who started the site believed Leon was getting rich from advertisers on this site so they left here and started their own board. I find it funny that the "new" guy is trying desperately to stir the pot and nobody is taking his bait.

it's a pretty civil and respectful board over there. i haven't heard from elkins for a couple years (maybe he was banned, or he chose not to come back), so some of the earlier OT stuff is gone. all 3 prewar boards seems to have a niche and thrive in their own ways, which is good for the growth of the hobby. a newbie may miss one board, but they're not gonna miss the others like this find suggests. we get them one way or another :)

The owners of the other forum are probably from Oklahoma.
