Any recommendations on the best book written on Christy Mathewson?
I've recently completed my last two books related to baseball and I'm looking for a new read. I'm interested in reading a good book on Christy Mathewson.
I was wondering amongst the members if you could recommend what is the definitive Matty read? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!:) |
Christy Mathewson, by Ronald Mayer
(game by game account) The Old Ball Game, by Frank Deford (McGraw and Mathewson) The Player, by Philip Seib (good read but too many distractions) The Celebrant, by Eric Greenberg (though Fiction, you should include this in your list - a must read!) |
I've only read 'The Old Ballgame', which is noted above. While I can't say how it compares to any other book on Matty, I can vouch for it as being a solid read on its own.
Regards, Richard. |
I'll also recommend The Old Ball Game by Deford.
Very enjoyable read |
Hey guys,
Thanks for the recommendations! Any others that have been missed? Thanks! |
Many thanks to all that recommended The Old Ball Game as a great Christy Mathewson read. I just finished up the book last night. Very good!!

Matty books
Hi Scott,
I read this one and thought it was good: Matty, an American Hero, by Ray Robinson. From 1993. |

I will check it out! BTW, I just bought a copy of The Celebrant, by Eric Wolfe Greenberg, from board member Scooter. Thanks Lou! |
Scott- The Ray Robinson book is excellent, the Seib book is also well written. I enjoyed THE OLD BALLGAME by Deford but felt like it kind of hit the high spots and did not get too deep into Mathewson's life.
