What's the Best & Worst looking T206?
Bored, bored, bored! How about this one, what, in your opinion, are the best and worst looking T206's (1 each please) and why if you want.
My votes: Best - Walter Johnson portrait, it looks like Rembrandt painted it. Worst - Spike Shannon, he doesn't even look human with the huge head and the thin, stripey arms. |
Before I opened the thread those were the exact two I had in mind.
|
I'm in....
Best Looking: Matty dark cap:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nf2xJ-P1HZJ8xKigniw8cw?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Ys7fw31kTDs/RouvhE_nEgI/AAAAAAAAAmc/5zE6s2_pCv4/s800/MathewsonThrowingDarkCapSGC60.JPG" /></a> Worst Looking: Dick Egan -- I always think he looks half-human/half-horse: <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/uidvwPu4sAGZCq_0xcRJF4VhjkTh5fOEXToGv4T2Vmo?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Ys7fw31kTDs/TGdW2IheKTI/AAAAAAAAIGU/J3PDjQqJO5s/s800/Egan.JPG" /></a> Edited to add -- the Shannon has amazing background colors that overwhelm the bizarre proportionality of the player. Egan's just an ugly card, with ugly drab colors and an ugly horsey player. |

I've mentioned this before.....but before you kill the messenger (in this case "the artist"), please carefully note that Spike really did look like that.
Lovely Day... |
I think you should post a picture of each for those of us who do not know every card.
|
B&w t206
Best - Cobb Bat off Shoulder
Worst - Hulswitt -- Looks like a cartoon batting in pajamas |
Egan and a purty T206
Egan was also not an attractive player--when I have the chance I can post the only D381 I own, which happens to be Egan. I lucked into his D381 a few years back, but egad(!) what a face. I think the T206 makes him look relatively acceptable amongst polite society.
I have always been partial to the Leifield pitching pose--I am sucker for sherbert skies, and it has a great pitching pose to boot. If someone doesn't beat me to it, I will post this card too. Brian |

Best - Tim Jordan Batting - love the colors
Worst - Spike Shannon - just an ugly card |

Spike has always been one of my favorite cards from the set for just that reason. It's so odd. Looks like it was drawn by a 6 year old on bring your kid to work day.
The Bender and Walsh portraits have always been favorites of mine. Stephens has an itty-bitty pomegranate head... |
Leifield Pitching
Definitely a beautiful card, with orange and strawberry sherbert sky...

I don't know the set as well as most of you, but I think the Cobb bat off shoulder pose is the best looking T206 I have ever seen.
|
The Lobert and Dougherty portraits (I'm at work, so no scans unless someone wants to help) are among the best and, up there with Shannon and Egan is McLean - drawn by a 8 year old, it seems

best--- worst
johnson portrait is angelic.
mowrey looks like that talk scary Lurch fellow. best, barry |
Tough to pick the best. There are many good ones. Fielder Jones-hands on hips, comes to mind. Camnitz-arms folded. Reulbach-glove showing. Of course, most of the portraits are really good.
Worst: easy- Spike Shannon 2nd Rube Kissinger |
I am biased because this is one of the first two T206s I got back in '79 or '80, but I have always thought this was one of the best looking cards in the set.

[QUOTE=T206Collector;830425]Disagree on McLean -- this is one of my favorites because of the very dark blue uni and catcher's equipment. But it is childlike in its rendering to be sure....
Kind of my point- it should be a lot cooler than it is, which is disappointing. |
Best: Lajoie Portrait
Worst: Chappelle |
Did Spike have really bad TMJ or was he from northern Georgia ?
|
I think my worst has to go to a SLer.. Greminger.. he reminds me of the uncle from the Munsters...

Whoever mentioned Mike Mowrey is onto something, he is a bizarre looking (nice way of saying really ugly) guy when you see him in photographs as well.
Best--I like Powers, Walter Johnson, and many of the other catcher's gear poses Worst-I can't believe nobody has mentioned Bill "glove on the wrong hand" Burns. I literally HATE that card more every time I see it. -Rhett |

I think we can put Purtell in the same anatomic curiosity category as Shannon. If this picture is accurate, he was build like a chimpanzee.

Best - Pattee w/ Tim Jordan second (not my pattee...I don't have mine scanned)
Worst - have to agree with Shannon Bill |

Cant narrow it down to just one so my votes are....
Best- Cobb Bat off Shoulder/Hal Chase Pink Portrait Worst- Egan/Emil Batch |
Behold the monster lurking within The Monster

Like I mentioned previously, I think the artist did a real good job at making Mr. Egan look as presentable as possible.

Best: Keeler Batting
Worst: Egan |
Cool thread. Just marking so I can find it again and read all the responses.

Best and Worst
The WORST looking cards are the ones I have...
The BEST looking cards are the one I don't have. Think about that one! |
The background on Bell's card is amazing. It looks like a thunderstorm building at sunset.
http://www.oldcardboard.com/t/t206/030.jpg (Image courtesy of oldcardboard.com.) I have to go with Egan for the worst. |

This is probably my favorite too. |
Niles/Boston was always my favorite
He just has this nonchalant look on his face, and you see more body than on almost any other card. "Yeah, this is my office. I play base ball."
|
I always liked the Donlin seated (not my card)
http://centuryoldcards.com/images/1909t206donlinsit.jpg But I never liked the O'Leary Hands On (also not my card) http://centuryoldcards.com/images/1909t206oleary.jpg |

may be the most amusing thread I've come across in my few months on this forum.
Best: agree with many of the already mentioned examples (Chase pink, Cobb bat off shoulder, Dougherty portrait, Jorban batting, Pattee horizontal). What seems to catch my eye are the multi-colored backgrounds on action shots or portraits with unusual solid background colors. One example not yet mentioned is McIntyre brookly & chicago -- nice array of colors / clouds (image not mine). Also noticed that many of the Brooklynites have great backgrounds, and that the red in the Boston jerseys really stands out. Worst: Egan all the way. did a double-take when I first saw it -- wondered if someone at the printing company lost their job for letting that get printed. |
Tough to argue with all the choices for best looking, although I'll add another couple to the list -- Burch, batting and Ames hands at chest.
http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...tting_tn_1.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/ltsgall...mes_hands1.jpg Also tough to argue with the worst looking ones, although I'll cast my vote for Shannon. |

To follow up with Jay's mention of this one, it would probably be right at the top of my list as well.

Like others before and after me, I'm a T206 portrait kind of guy (guess it all started when I discovered Playboy....). Here are three of my favorites.
