A Little Help, Please . . . 1910 White Sox Park
2 Attachment(s)
I've concluded this is a 1910 image of the White Sox Park in Chicago
My thinking is as follows . . . 1) The sender of the card states that the field is the new home of the White Sox as it look on Labor Day, 1910 (Park opened in July of 1910) 2) The scoreboard has a promo for "George W. Jackson Co.." Jackson was a friend of Comiskey who was contracted to build the park 3) The wooden bleachers were later replaced, but their presence make perfect sense for 1910 But there is a couple curiosities I cannot figure out . . . 1) Why is there a flag pole in left field and in fair territory? Have you ever seen an early image with this flag pole? 2) The scoreboard is set up to show the Cubs vs Brooklyn, yet the Cubs never played Brooklyn in 1910 on any date that was even close to Labor Day. I'm confident that it is White Sox Park . . . but not convinced. Can any one help me with definative facts, rather than random speculation (I have enough of my own - see above) Thanks! Dan I'm sure it is White Sox Park . . . but I just can't figure out the flag pole mystery . . . any ideas? |
Well, the postmark is August 1910 and it states "LAST" Labor Day which would mean 1909. Now, the Cubs did play Brooklyn Sept 1-2-3 in 1909 but it was at Brooklyn. Oh well.
And I cannot figure out the flag pole!! Ray |
I think the postmark is actually Oct. 31 1910. The 8-15 AM refers to the time.

You're right about the postmark, but Ray's comment about "last Labor Day" meaning 1909(instead of "last" Labor Day meaning the one just passed), puts the image in 1909 - a year before the park openned! Hey - you're not helping, Ray! [insert laughter here] Dan

Here's a shot of Comiskey from 1910 that shows that big flagpole from the other side.
Click the link it's an adobe photo so I couldn't figure out how to post the photo here. http://encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org/pages/3495.html |
Thanks, that pic is a great help . . . but now I'm wondering why I don't see the covered stands down the left field line in my photo . . . Dan

The rain gutter shown at the top of the column in your postcard also shows up in Dan's linked photo. It's at the same location and doesn't show up on any other columns. The roof line down the left field line is set back too far to show up in your postcard.

I like the way you think, Dan! I really want this to be White Sox Park in 1910 . . . Another Dan

I'm still getting a chuckle from Dan's photo from the outfield bleachers view. If you zoom in on the writing along the 3rd base line seats it's says "No betting allowed in this park". Kinda funny considering what happened 9 years later.

Here's another image that might be of some use. Note the huge area in foul territory down the 3rd base line.
