You bet your life we want your Lajoies

As Karl Marx said on You Bet Your Wife: "Say the secret word and win $100."

In this case we'll let you in on the secret: It's Nap Lajoie. And if you have some rare ones to sell, it'll net(54) you more than an Alexander Hamilton.

Let us know what you have, and if you hit the Marx, we'll make an offer.

Remember our manifesto (though we don't want to Harpo on it): Satisfaction guaranteed; you won't be Grouchy.

Please write in ultra-high-grade supreme confidence.

(Note: We're not interested in postwar cards with Gummo stains.)

Peter_Spaeth 07-24-2010 07:16 PM

Oh stop the monkey business, will you? Go to the National and order room service. You'll feel like you're at the circus.

calvindog 07-24-2010 08:13 PM

Wow, a Gummo reference. You don't really hear too much about Gummo and Zeppo these days.

Rob D. 07-24-2010 08:23 PM

You know who you never hear about anymore? Salmon P. Marx.

Jim VB 07-24-2010 08:26 PM

Wow. Tough room to work.

Especially after a day at the races or a night at the opera there. To find the restaurant, go west at the big store.

barrysloate 07-25-2010 10:08 AM

You guys are a bunch of Cocoanuts (their first film).

pete zouras 07-25-2010 10:12 AM

I have an e94 green lajoie that you said you might be interested in trading for a weak back.

barrysloate 07-25-2010 10:20 AM

How long have you had a weak back?

Oh, about a week back.

Rob D. 07-25-2010 12:12 PM

While you all were posting your attempts at humor and making my thread more visible, I just bought five PSA 8 and 9 Goudey Lajoies for $100 each.

Thanks, guys, and keep up the good work!

calvindog 07-25-2010 12:27 PM

You only closed five deals? Color me unimpressed. I'll close five in my hotel room at the National before I have the bell man bring my bags to the room.

HRBAKER 07-25-2010 12:28 PM

Nap

Rob,
I have this one available. It's looks like it was just made yesterday. :D

...from a laid off, one-legged, school teacher, suffering from kidney failure, caused by her diabetes.

Finish the story!

Brian Van Horn 07-25-2010 12:52 PM

OK. We've heard from the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges. What about Laurel and Hardy?

barrysloate 07-25-2010 01:20 PM

Okay- In "March of the Wooden Soldiers" Stan and Ollie play a form of trap ball, an early bat and ball game. I think that's pretty cool.

bijoem 07-26-2010 06:38 AM

Rob -

sitting down for breakfast, I see my toast inexplicably has the image of Nap Lajoie on it. Its gotta be him. I think this is a sign of some kind.

If you are interested in buying this piece of toast - just let me know.

Please hurry with your decision though - I am a bit hungry.

Rob,
Possibly unique but I would hold out for one without the severely rounded corners.

Beckett slabs these, right?

Brian Van Horn 07-26-2010 10:09 AM

Rob,

You better bite on that deal quick. The casino in Vegas just called.

Yes, but you'll never get anything more than an authentic on that. I can say with certainty that it has not been trimmed, but still, look how uneven the edges appear. And the discoloration does not look natural; rather it looks like someone deliberately applied a heating element to it to get it to look brown. Finally, there appears to be bread loss near Nap's right ear. No disrespect, but it looks like a crummy example.

Section103 07-26-2010 10:22 AM

I heard a rumor that Lajoie doesn't appear on any waffles because he didnt want children associated with anything from Belgium.

You're right. It started with his own natural aversion toward Brussels sprouts.

"a crummy example."

awesome.

I can't top the current comments, but just wanted to compliment all of you for an AWESOME thread...

Rob D. 07-26-2010 11:47 AM

All of these posts and attempts at humor have drawn yet more attention to this thread. While you were thinking up puns and plays on words, I was buying three previously unknown prewar cards of Lajoie from five different sellers. Total expenditure: a gazillion dollars.

Keep up the good work, guys.

JasonL 07-26-2010 11:58 AM

Ha ha ha!!!!!!!

The first truly LOL thread in awhile...applause!

But to be honest, while I do not think the item can be slabbed safely, I would like to submit that I think it bears a much stronger resemblance to Shoeless Joe than any Lajoie, Nap or otherwise. Perhaps we have the owner of the original photo as a member, so that an accurate comparison can be made to the historical event. By the way, I do own several examples of these Shoeless Joe toasts, including the finest extant, and it will be on sale within hours!

Rob, congratulations on becoming the Penultimate collector of Nap Lajoie during the course of this thread! That is awesome. Please reserve enough time this evening to sitting in your room talking amongst yourselves as to what the best way to display the rarest of items might be...

Rob: You can have these for nothing. Sorry they are not ultra high grade. I hope they are worthy of your distinguished collection.
I am humbled just to live on the same planet.

Rob,

Time for a road trip to David's favorite restaurant!
