Scout who helped discover Nolan Ryan dies
"Red" Gaskill, a bird-dog scout who helped the Mets sign future Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, has died.
Scouts are the lifeblood of baseball. Sad news indeed. Here's a link to Gaskill's obituary. A true baseball man. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/7106939.html Condolences to his family, friends and the organizations for which he worked. |
Thanks, Rob, for that. My prayers and condolences to his friends and family.

Great article-thanks Rob. My condolences to his family and friends.

Thanks Rob. Sounds like this man had the game in his veins, the kind of guy with whom you'd love to share a beverage and talk ball.

RIP, Mr. Gaskill. Pretty cool story. I agree, would have been a fun guy to have a beer with. Baseball's lost a lot of giants this past week.
As for the man he scouted, I was pretty young near the end of Ryan's career, but as a young White Sox fan, I'll never forget when Nolan Ryan (then 46), did this to Robin Ventura (then 26). I'm not surprised the man who scouted Ryan lived to a ripe old age; tough guys can always spot a tough guy. RIP |
scout
