What are some period sets that feature Negro League players?
I was looking at the Negro League thread on the memorabilia side. I've always wanted to acquire a great Negro League piece but prefer cards to memorabilia. I was wondering what sets feature Negro League players and if anyone has a card I'd love to see it.
I know that the Aguilitas, Billiken, and Felices sets have a lot of great players. And that the Cabanas set has a few too. Are there any other sets that feature Negro Leaguers? I think i remember a post card set too. |
Where's a Noize Bringer when you need him? :)

Here is a 2007 Allen & Ginter autograph card of Stanley "Doc" Glenn I was lucky enough to get in a box I bought when they first came out.

From the 1923-24 era are the three Cuban League issues: Tomas Gutierrez, Nacionales & Billiken (as you mentioned). From the late 1940's - early 1950's: Toleteros & Denia are Puerto Rican League issues. If you want to call it a "set", c1931 Harrison Studios issued a few postcards picturing Homestead Grays players including the dual-autographed Josh Gibson postcard. As you also mentioned the two Caramelo (Felices) Cuban League issues were produced during the mid-1940's. These sets would be a good start for you.

Phil,
You forgot the Punch issue from the teens, the Propagandas and Almanaques from the '40s and the Acebos from the '50s. With those additions, period sets containing negro league players are pretty well covered. Kenny |
Pre-1950 sets
-Punch Cigars -Cabanas -Aguilitas (2 sets) -Tomas Gutierrez -Billiken (La Moda) -Nacionales -Mallorquina -Caramelo Deportivo (2 sets) -Almanaque Deportivo -Sensacion Premiums -Propagandas Montiel Los Reyes Del Deporte (only a few Negro League/Cubans scattered in here w/ a Dihigo) -Toleteros -Denia -Caramelos "El Indio" -Acebo -Ansco -Alerta Premiums (ANTONIO Alcalde) This is not an exhaustive list and there are some smaller Latin American sets that have some players that spent time in the Negro Leagues. Also keep in mind that several late-40's early 50's minor league sets include players that had previously spent time in the Negro Leagues examples... -1952 Parkhurst (Wilmer Fields, etc.) -1952-53 Mothers Cookies (Frank Austin, Art Wilson, Piper Davis, etc.) -Remar Bread (Art Wilson, Alonzo Perry, etc.) -etc. |

For the uninitiated: the career contemporary cards of the great negro league players are very very hard to find in nice shape and much more scarce than what we normally consider tough vintage cards to find.
As a Hall of Fame collector I find them the most difficult to even find for sale (even compared with the 19th century HOFers). Charleston, Mendez and Cooper have been especially elusive for me. (I'm not even considering Pete Hill) This is most difficult one that I have -- Biz Mackey, a Catcher known most for his fielding, who Roy Campanella thanked when he made the major leagues |
Those are some great cards guys.

Ken:
Unbelieveable condition on your Negro Leaguers. They are difficult enough to find in any condition but your's take the cake! |
What does it say on the John Henry Lloyd Aguilitas? It kinda looks like Joe.

NL Cards

As others have mentioned, NL cards are some of the most elusive and difficult to even come across--especially the HOFers as you then compete with the HOF collectors as well.
I was about to comment on the outstanding Biz Mackey in a 10 until i saw Kenny's collection--what an outstanding group--over the top in many instances. This is the exception and near impossible to find in that shape--As a NL collector, you pretty much take whatever you can get. Here are a couple of my favorites-- |

I feel like I should take my hat off or put my hand over my heart when browsing this thread. Everybody has their own preferences, but this thread is the most awesome display Ive seen on N54 (in my short time, but still...)

Those Billiken cards are great lookin'. The Doby is cool too.
Thanks for showing. |
wow.. just wow
As a Negro League fan and erstwhile collector (and proud owner of one of the few authentic/authenticated Willie Foster autographs), this display is absolutely incredible.. I hope anyone and everyone who looks through this thread appreciates the demonstrated time and effort (and investment) by the owners of these gems, as I certainly do.. wow, that's all, just wow....
