D381 WaJo - Bargain of the Week
http://cgi.ebay.com/D381-WALTER-JOHN...-/250655999333
I'd think for $60k, I'd at least get the tab too. |
or some Harley gear...
.. which is the kind of stuff he's been selling before this incredible bargain.....
|
emailed back and forth
I emailed back and forth with the seller yesterday and today. It's the real deal but at least 10x too much ....probably more like 20x too much. They seem like decent folks and know they probably won't sell. From our emails I don't think they care too much....but who knows?
|
Sounds like they will fit right in on ebay.
|
That is a great, great card.
Leon - I don't think it is 20x too high. Closer to the 10x you mentioned. very cool card. |
ebay
I wish they had not grouped the other cards in with the Johnson.

Nutty price, but one interesting fact: the Johnson card isn't on any checklist of cards from this set. The current SCD list shows 103 unique players, so this would make 104.

Yeah, after more thought, I think the WOJO would be in the 5k range but ya never know....so 10x too much would be closer. As far as being catalogued these are D381 Ferguson's and are much scarcer than even the D381 Flieschmann's. As I told the seller, there are only a few Ferguson's with tabs known. I have only ever seen 2 and even questioned if they came with one, at one time. But then someone showed an old Xerox of a coupon so I believed it. Then of course I was able to get one of the 2 I had ever seen. I paid a ton for it but what is a type collector to do? For all you newbies out there, or others that just don't know, the Ferguson's have one line of writing under the picture and the Fleischmanns have 2 lines of writing. That is the way to tell. I would imagine the checklists would be the same but all D381's are so scarce it's hard to say for sure. best regards |
Leon, The Casey Stengel with the Fleischmann's tab (not Ferguson like one would suspect) comes with one line of text BUT he is the only "Fleischmann one-liner" I have ever seen (also I have never seen a Stengel with 2 lines). This isn't really an issue unless one is paying a premium for a non-tabbed Stengel because they think they are getting a Ferguson. Anyways, just sharing an observation while we are talking about the D381's!

That Johnson is a beautiful card and may well be a 1 of 1 at this point. It will be interesting to see if The Big Train can command as much as Strasberg in this upside down hobby.

One line, but it's a Fleischmann's, not a Ferguson's.

Thanks for posting it.....so much for my rule of thumb :(
|
Yes, there are other fleischmanns with one line ID too but not many. I know this because all of my original D381's were from my great grandpa who's from NY, so i know they're all Fleischmanns even though they don't have tabs. I know the Stengel is one, Red Smith is another and there is one or two more. I'll have to check.
I guess I can add the Johnson to my want list, although it probably won't ever be crossed off.... this Johnson is featured on the Ferguson felt Pillow top Premium also. |
even more
I would bet a dime to a dollar we will see more uncataloged ones turn up over the years. This isn't uncommon for scarcely seen sets.....Gypsy Queen (N175) and E104-3 come to mind as sets where more unknown players will turn up.
|
J. Johnston and Mike Mowrey are 2 others with one line. There may also possibly be two line fleischmann variations of these players too, I don't think I've seen any though

new information about this card:
A version of this card without tab is being auctioned by Heritage right now. This and the Ty Cobb are my top 2 needed for my set. I think I'm 8 away from the 104 different players now. The owner of this card, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave me permission to show this to everyone on the board. This way everyone knows what they're bidding on more accurately and that it's not a 1/1, nor newly discovered. It's just been newly outed to public. Hopefully it will give me a slightly better crack at the card. But who knows..... **The large picture is from a photocopy of the card, which I cut out of the paper and then scanned to my comp, which is why edges look trimmed. Card isn't really like that. I had a scan of the card too but coudlnt make it large from the email attachment. |
thanks for sharing Erick
I doubt though it will lower the price of the one in Heritage Still extremely scarce and it's WaJo! |
yeah, definitely still a great card, but I guess it can't hurt my chances. There are numerous cards from this set that have very few known copies though. We'll see what happens........time for sleep
|
Hi Erick - I'm thinking the D381 WaJo in the Heritage Auction would be a nice addition to my WaJo collection!! :D
