T206 super-prints....SOVEREIGN 350 vs SOVEREIGN 460
The 6 super prints in the T206 SOVEREIGN brand represent American Lithograph's first extention of
cards from the 350 series into the the 460 series. There has been some misunderstanding regarding these cards in this sub-set. Therefore, I have posted scans illustrating this scenario. Also, listed are somewhat recent average prices of these 6 super-prints with their 350 series backs, and their 460 series counterparts (prices are based on Vg-Ex cards). <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/absov3x4bluechasedkcap.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/babsov3x4bluechasedkcap.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/absov3x4redcobb.jpg" alt="[linked image]"><img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/absoveversbat.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> <img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt113/zanted86/absovchancematty.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> Subject............Sovereign 350........Sovereign 460 Chase (blue).........$ 150....................$ 450 Chase (cap)..........$ 100....................$ 300 Chance.................$ 200....................$ 600 Cobb....................$ 1000..................$ 4000 Evers....................$ 150....................$ 450 Matty....................$ 600....................$ 1400 NOTE..the difference in the color of the ink on the 350 series backs (apple green) vs the ink (normal green) on the 460 series backs. Hi Ted,
Those 350 Series backs look more apple green than lime green to me :D It's really awesome to see all the super prints with both Sovereign backs! Thank you for sharing them and the price info. :) Best Regards, Craig |
Thanks Craig....I meant to say "apple green".
My pricing numbers may be a little outdated. Perhaps, others will chime in and provide more recent numbers. Best regards, TED Z |
Ted
figuring out the 2 color greens was a giant leap in this century old set-they do look great side by side.
i think I am out of date on pricing also...:D |
Red Cobb Sovereign 350 vs. 460...
ted-
i've been monitoring red cobbs for some time now & would estimate that the current internet market value for vg-ex examples of sov 350 is $1300-1400, and $2600-2800 for 460 specimens. are there any definitive theories on why thiese six super-prints seem so sparce... or, why there were two different shades of green employed? thanks for yet another intriguing & provocative thread, ted! |
Mark
Regarding your........" Are there any definitive theories on why thiese six super-prints
seem so sparce...or, why there were two different shades of green employed? " My guess is they were short-printed, as these 6 super-prints are scarcer than the 46 subjects in the 460 series of the Sovereign set. Regarding the color (apple green) difference of the 350 series backs of these cards.... these 6 are part of a 66-card run of Sovereign subjects whose backs were printed with this color. Why this was done is a mystery. Here is a list of these 66...... Ames (hands over head) Baker Bender (no trees) Berger Bradley (bat) M. Brown (Chicago) Burch (fielding) Chance (yellow potrait) Chase (blue portrait) Chase (dark cap) Cobb (red portrait) Cobb (bat off) Conroy (bat) Davis (A's) Crawford (bat) Donlin (bat) Doolan (bat) Dougherty (arm in air) Downey (bat) Joe Doyle (arms over head) Larry Doyle (bat) Elberfeld (Wash.-fielding) Evers (bat-yellow sky) Griffith (bat) Jennings (one hand) Jennings (two hands) Johnson (pitching) Jordan (bat) Joss (pitching) Kleinow (NY-catching) Konetchy (glove low) Lajoie (bat) Lake (no ball) Leach (cap) Leifield (bat) Magee (bat) Manning (pitching) Mathewson (dark cap) McIntyre (Brooklyn & Chi) McQuillan (bat) Mullin (bat) Murphy (bat) Nichols (bat) O'Leary (hands/knees) Overall (yellow sky) Pelty (vertical) Pfeister (throwing) Reulbach (no glove) Rhoades (arm extended) Rucker (bat) Seymour (throwing) F. Smith (Chicago-white cap) Snodgrass (catching) Stahl (glove) Steinfeldt (bat) Street (catching) Sweeney (fielding) Tinker (bat off) Wagner (bat on right) White (pitching) Wilhelm (bat) Willetts Willis (bat) Willis (throwing) Wiltse (throwing) CYoung (glove) Further info on these "apple green" Sovereign's is found in this thread...... http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ht=apple+green TED Z |
"these 6 super-prints...were short-printed"
hey ted-
with the abundance of these cards known to exist, my question should have been, "why were the sovereign 460 super-prints short-printed?" perhaps because by the time they were printed a glut had already been created? how much is actually known about the print process of this specific group? |
The Sovereign 460 list
Ted -
Reading through your list of Sovereign 460 subjects I noticed a couple of names missing of cards which I have, Duffy and Crandell. I've had the Crandell for several years (yes, I know it needs re-graded) and recently obtained the Duffy from the Goodwin auction. Bob |
Bob K
My above list of 66 cards are in the 350 series of the Sovereign set. Your Crandall and Duffy
are in the 460 series of this set. Here is the list of cards in the 460 series...... Abbaticcio (blue sleeves) Ball (Cleveland) Bell (pitching) Bescher (hands over) Bergen (catching) Bridwell (portrait w/cap) Camnitz (arms at side) Camnitz (arms up) Chance (portrait-yellow) Chance (bat) Chase (portrait-blue) Chase (dark cap) Chase (Trophy) Cobb (portrait-red) Crandall (portrait w/cap) Devore Doyle (portrait) Duffy Evers (bat-yellow sky) Ford Frill Gandil Geyer Herzog (Boston) Howell (hands at waist) Hummell Lake (with ball) Latham Marquard (follow thru) Mathewson (dark cap) McGraw (portrait-cap) McGraw (glove at hip) Merkle (throwing) Meyers Murray (portrait) Needham Oldring (bat) Overall (blue sky) Payne Pfeffer Schaefer (Washington) Schulte (back view) Schlei (portrait) Schlei (bat) Seymour (portrait) Sheckard (glove) H. Smith (Brooklyn) Stovall (bat) Tannehill (Chicago) Tinker (bat on) Wheat Wiltse (portrait w/cap) TED Z |
Ted,
Sorry for the confusion. Thank you for the 460 list. Bob |

Regarding your......
" why were the sovereign 460 super-prints short-printed? " I cannot say for sure. However, these super-prints are fundamentally 350-only subjects by virtue of the fact that they are found with American Beauty 350 (frame) backs. Paradoxically, these six cards are also 460-only subjects, since they were printed with most of the 460 series backs. They have split personalities :) Now, onward to your 2nd question...... " how much is actually known about the print process of this specific group? " I can date the 460 series printing of this set to as early as the Spring/Summer of 1910 due to the fact that Frank Smith (traded to Boston, Aug 1910) and Red Kleinow (traded to Boston, June 1910) are not depicted in the 460 series of the Sovereign set. Both of these guys' cards reflect their trades to Boston with all the other 460 series T-brands (indicating that those print runs occurred later than the Summer of 1910). Considering this....perhaps these super-prints were printed at the very tail end of the Sovereign 460 press run, and therefore received very limited printing. TED Z |
t206 Sovereign Super Prints
Thank you so much Ted for posting those T206 Sovereign super prints. I just found in my box of T206's an Evers Chicago Sovereign 460 in a PSA 5.
|
Thanks TedZ, this is great information you have provided to us. I have been considering trying to put together the 6 Super Print Sovereign 460 cards as a project within trying to put together the T206 set, but it seems like they rarely become available. I have the Chase dark cap Sovereign 460 so far, so only 5 to go!!:D
Sincerely,Clayton |
Clayton
You are in for quite a challenge. Especially, finding the Cobb. All the years that I've been collecting
T206's, I know of only 4 - Cobb's with the Sovereign 460 back. I have one, another Net54 member has one, one recently sold in auction, and one sold back in 1996. The Chase (dark cap) is most often seen. I did not have much difficulty getting Matty. Chase (blue) was tougher. And, Evers and Chance are seldom seen. So, I wish you lots of luck, if you choose this adventure. Regards, TED Z |
Thanks Ted. It sounds like the Cobb Sov.460 may turn it into a never ending journey.
But in the meantime, I will hope and pray that I stumble upon one at an estate sale somewhere;) Sincerely,Clayton |
i found it harder to pick up certain sov 350 super prints opposed to the 460. also in the cycle brands. why is that? just trying to learn more.. love these threads by the way.

I am sad to say that I only got $62 for my SOV 460 SGC 40 Chase Black. It was even money for me after a year, but was hoping for a good bit more (I replaced it with a Trophy Chase for that spot in the backs line). It was properly advertised, but not much action.
Thanks for all the great info Ted! Bob |
