t206 Honus Wagner
What would be a fair price for this t206 Honus Wagner currently on ebay? I researched some final prices over the last few years and was wondering what your opinions would be?

Not sure what the going price for a frankenwagner is! i think this card has made a couple appearances in threads recently.

Does anyone know if before/after photos are around? I'd like to see the original.... based on the description it sounds like it was barely there.

The card on Ebay has been around the hobby before. It was sold in the Legendary Live Auction at the 2009 National, for $222,000 (including the buyers premium.)
Recently, (about a month or two ago), it was offered in a Mears auction. The high bid was around $160,000 - $165,000. It did not meet reserve and did not sell. We had a thread on it here on the board, at the time. Mears actually disclosed the amount of work that had been done on it. Their auction showed that it made two trips to a paper restoration/conservation company. One was prior to the July Legendary auction. One was after. Cards that have had this much work done are generally valued at far less than any of the examples you cited. Edit to add - Here is the link to the recent thread on this card. The Mears auction doesn't show the before pictures, but they do show the work orders from the conservator. It had an incredible amount of work done. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...=mears+auction |

Your point (of which I am in agreement with) reminds me of a discussion in my college philosophy class regarding a Spanish galleon. The ship was rebuilt one plank/board at a time and the question was, "When does the old ship cease to exist and something else take its place?" |
I think its worth $50K, But if I had that $$ I wouldnt buy it.
To me, Its like a Duesenberg made of 75% Bondo PS Someone on another board said he thought it was the same card that at one time used to be diecut, and from the description of the work I think he was right, but have never seen the before pic. |

Excellent illustrative work, Jeff.
Ole Wagner ceased to exist a number of steps back methinks---sadly. best, barry |
My condolences to the card's family and friends. :)

That card had more face lifts than Joan Rivers.

Would this be the first time a genuine Wagner t-206 has been offered on E-bay?
I compare this Wagner to my pickup truck I tell everyone it`s a 1999 Dodge but all the parts are new! |
Nope, the Gretzky/McNall Wagner was on ebay for one of its sales. Ebay used to offer auctions linked to live auctions. A pretty good cross promotion, although I don't know how effective it was.
The Ebay offering of that one used a picture display that was singularly horrible. A tiny scan, with a zoom window that only allowed viewing of about 1/4 of the card at any given time. Similar to Ebays current zoom function, but without an option of viewing one large image. My thought at the time was that it was incredibly lame. They had a $1Million minimum bid but couldn't be bothered to make a decent scan. Steve B |
