Not I, but what interested me were the Williamson and the Geiss were Chicago and according to the Old Judge book Gray did not do the Chicago pictures. Either reprinted by them or an addition to the book.

Were there any significant players in the batch other than Mack and Beckley?

Was there any concern as to the seller's feedback ? ( it was zero) I was just curious if this might have hurt prices due to risk, etc. Prices looked healthy, but just wondering what the thoughts were on the seller and his 0 feedback rating.

Jeff it was fun watching the auctions wind down with you. Although you already know, I won the trio of the (3) 1889 Minneapolis Miller player cabinets. Prices were insane. The 12 cabinets ended for just under $20K. WOW!!! What I thought was special about one of the Miller cabinets I won is John Ryn 1st base is believed to be one of the first deaf players in baseball. The other two Miller players in the winning group were Joe Miller 3rd base, and John Mitchell pitcher.

ps- I spoke to the seller personally at length twice on the phone before the auction. Auctions were 100% legit....

Not to sound rude but because you spoke with someone doesn't really mean anything. I talked with a guy before about an item he had for sale and he sounded great and all but in the end he sold it to another person and kept my money.

You are correct and it pays to be very careful in instances like this, but I have no worries in this case.

Utterly awesome Pittsburg cabinets. Wish I'd have seen them so I could use my leftover money from REA to buy even more stuff.

Dstudeba--This is an addition to the Old Judge book. We had Stevens listed as doing the 1889 Chicago images but did not have anyone listed for the 1887 Chicago images (which these are)

I thought the prices went quite a bit higher than I would have expected on just about all of these. Sometimes the hype and excitement about a new find like this often create a buzz that produces higher prices. If these had been sold one at a time slowly on ebay they would not have gone as high.

WOW!!, I missed these altogether, not that I would have bid at those prices. Regardless, this was a very interesting collection with the two 1887 Chicago Proofs for Goodwin & Co. (Geiss & Williamson). As Jay noted, we didn't know who took the 1887 Chicago photos and by extension the 1887 Detroit photos. Both the 1887 Chicago & Detroit cards share the same backdrop with fake grass covering the same floor pattern (i.e., same studio). So Gray Studio took most of the 1887 Photos, perhaps all but New York.

Here are a few that come to mind....

1. One scenario would be to simplify any tax consequences, assuming he was selling the cards as a favor for a friend/relative/neighbor/loan shark buddy etc.

2. He wasn't 110% sure they were real and did not want the negative feedback on his regular account.

3. Didn't want his wife, ex-wife, current-girlfriend, and the lawyer of his ex-wife to find out he has more $$$.

I used the 1896 and 1897 Spalding Guides and would call my i.d.'s educated guesses. Great group of cabinets.

Tony - Good research with the seller... Congrats on the pick up ! This type of grouping is not normally seen on Ebay, and the seller might have helped his cause to explain why he was doing what he was doing and list his other ebay acct in the description as I have to think a few folks held back, even though prices were robust.

Thanks Jeremy. I agree with you. Funny thing, I just hung up with the seller again to discuss payment and he even mentioned he should have placed them on his main acct. He stated he had at least 50 emails of potential bidders asking him about his (0) feedback on this new acct he opened up for just this one time shot. Said he'd never do that again.

Selling these on his main account would have been worth at least a few thouand more in my opinion, but we'll never know. I never bid on auctions without the sellers having some reliable selling history.

I agree with Rhys, I don't think they would have made more listing with their main account. I was hoping that the zero feedback would keep prices low but unfortunately for me that didn't seem to happen.

Those are absolutely incredible cabinet photos. There's still stuff out there.

Hi Jerry- I just emailed you before I came back on this thread. You are indeed correct. I will edit my post.

I agree with that list. #5 is a toughie. There are a bunch of guys on that '95 team for whom there are no known useful photos. Wish I knew who he was.

I only looked at them fairly quickly but #5 looks an awful lot like Jake Stenzel

edited to add: It's weird, but it looks like Mitchell and Miller are wearing uniforms that used to be from another team..you can see the faint "O" and "M" where it looks like patches were removed. I know that Miller played for Omaha in 1888, but I don't think Mitchell ever played in Omaha. I wonder if Minneapolis bought Omaha's old uniforms???
