Forget the regular topps cards and inserts, let' see the good stuff! I'll start it out with these:
1) 1954-55 Winter league program
2) 1957 Pirates photo pack photo
3) 1968 Topps 3-d pennant

Won this 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Tag-Ons auction on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Never heard of them and I don't know if it's rare, but if it includes Clemente I like it!

What on earth is that pennant? Is the card the same size as the regular 3D card? How were these issued? Are they actually rarer than the 3D cards?

I think you can put any card in the pennant?

paul 05-08-2010 06:54 PM

Oh.

3-d pennant

As I don't own the item, it is hard for me to offer clear information, but it is my understanding that it was issued this way - interesting to note that the opening has rounded corners - could be a coincidence. I have also never seen another penant that is designed to hold any card - anyone else able to provide a scan or photo of a similar one with no card or a different card?

The recent pennant price guide does not show this particular pennant; thought it might be in there but they just have the one with team photos. Would like to learn more about this item and the card being affixed.

Anyone know of a small museum in PGh with just clemente stuff? Apparently a guy started one here and you have to request a tour, and there's a bunch of rare original memorablia...I might try to research it and check it out since I live here and could set up a visit

Clemente museum

His name is Duane Rieder. He is a commercial photographer (and a really nice guy). Here is a link to his website
. He works out of an old converted firehouse which is where the "museum" is. I haven't seen him in a while, but he had some AMAZING original photography of Clemente and others. Here is a link to some articles about the museum. Hope that helps.

These are about as oddball as it got back in the early seventies. Nowadays, many athletes are hawking sneakers but back then, few and far between.

I put it out to the non-Net54 world:

http://toppsarchives.blogspot.com/20...ant-fever.html

We'll see if anything turns up on it. I have been surprised at some of the stuff people send me after posting so anything is possible.

Thank you Dave

I am sure you do much of it for your own joy of learning and discovery, but the information you have collected and presented is of amazing value to us oddball and "weird" stuff collectors. Look forward to seeing what anyone comes up with. As a point of information, a photo of the pennant was featured in a Clemente calendar that was produced in the late 1990's (if memory serves me) - The photo I have is of the same pennant.
