Hocus Focus

I have the 19 card baseball subset of the 1948 Topps Magic Photos, plus the Bendix/Babe Ruth card, and an album, wrapper, developing directions and developing paper.. Also have what I think is a complete baseball subset ( 18) of the 1956 Hocus Focus and a wrapper. I have only 3 of the 1955 Hocus Focus, Robinson, Mathews and Lopat. I don't do scans but could sent you a B&W copy of what I have front and back if you pm me a shipping address Dave Hornish on this board has a blog site with some good background on and pictures of all 3 issues---you can find a link to the blog in the "test issue" thread in here

I Hocus-Focused on these a while back:

I am looking for scans of some of the larger (perforated) cards still but believe them to run to 96 cards, all of which were printed. I am not convinced all the smaller cards (non-perforated) were printed up to #121 (or even #131) as there are very few examples out there.

I'll post the large scans I need soon-need to dog out the info first.

One of my favorite players, back in the day.

I apologize for the poor image quality but the card itself is fun. Smaller version H-F showing Marciano's 1 punch KO to win the title from Walcott:

Val-thanks for posting the Groats-2 I can add to the visually confirmed lists! That smaller one is the first I have seen of him obviously. May I ask where you found the small Groat?

If anyone has front and back scans of the following larger (56's in the parlance), please send them along: 2 8 9 11 16 26 32 34 40 41 48 56 57 60 67 76 79 95

Dave, here is #26 Haddix.

Hi Dave - I have had both of the Groats for several years. Sorry, but I don't specifically remember where I got them at, but it would have been at a show - most likely Ft. Washington or one of the Nationals. FYI, the only other Hocus Focus I have is a 1955 Schmitz #18.

1956

Dave---I have the 56 baseball subset done, so if you would like front and back copies of 67 and 79, I can send them.

I also have an extra 56 Haddix, but it is one I upgraded

Adam, I can see you are still holding onto that Marciano for me...thanks!

Oh, the Haddix! I have been looking for that card for a long time for my Cardinals collection.

Do I have it right that there is a 1955 and 1956 version? What is the difference?

Haddix

I have the Haddix from 56, #26 in the whole Hocus Focus issue for that year, and # 6 in the baseball subset. I have only been able to get 3 of the 55s, and none are Haddix, but he is listed in the checklist as # 8. Not sure if the picture used differs, likely not. There is a size difference between the 55s and 56s, The 55s are sometimes referred to as "small" at 7/8 x 1-3/8 and the 56s as "large" at 1 X 1 5/8. My experience has been the 55s are much tougher and the larger baseball checklist for the 55s has some ambiguities in it

Yup, the small cards are ridiculously harder than the large ones. I believe the photos are them same on the cards common to each set. I also think there is a reasonable chance each subset of the small cards has five more cards when compared to the same large subset. That is the trend I have observed but I can't confirm all the small subsets yet.

I got your pix, will scan 'em soon-off to Mobile for a short business trip.
