post your favorite... common
Let's see your favorite "common" from your collection - no HOFers allowed! What do you like about the player/card you're showing?
|
Jeff,
Where's yours at?:) The following would be my favorite common. I acquired it last year and liked the size and the fact that it was not used as intended (as a blotter) which many are. It's also a pretty tough type card to find. Mike http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/r...rmsOldring.jpg |

I've been a big fan of Paul Richards' 1933 Goudey card since I first saw the movie, "Field of Dreams." In the movie's last scene, Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner) is confronted by his father's ghost, who appears before him as a young man in catcher's gear. I've never seen any evidence that the scene was inspired by Richards' card, but I'd like to believe it is ...

1911 Colgan's Red Border Unglaub/Lincoln
I like it because it's a Lincoln minor league card...and it's rare. Never seen another one. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...colgansred.jpg |
I'm with ya in the Richards. Great artwork and such an obscure pose...." dad...wanna have a Catch?"

Only horizontal card in the set, looks like he's crawling more so then sliding

My common pick is a tough year 1918 zeenut and I just like the picture with his right arm missing and all, not sure what they were thinking on that edit.

A couple of mine - love the horizontal CJ's, and as for the OJ, well, how many of you can be called a "Count"?
|
That Leach is a very pretty card! Are the colors that vibrant in hand?

Zeenut illusion
If you look close on that 1918 Zeenut of Miller, his right hand is visible due to his arm crossing the body, but because of the angle it appears as if he were an amputee. It definitely appears at first glance that Mr. Miller was baseball's first right handed pitcher that was missing his right arm.

this one isn't mine, but mine is similar. They called him "Ears" because hecklers used to get to him.

Can't just choose one. I tried.
For pure visual appeal, the intense greens and blues on the T212-3 Moore have always dazzled my colorblind eyes (I really shouldn't be allowed to dress myself). I also like the fact that appears to be soliciting divine intervention, which as a representative of a Los Angeles team, he most assuredly will not receive (Duck the Fodgers). Love the goofiness of the Zeenut Leard. And there's something vaguely mysterious and sinister about the T212-1 Mohler. Coolest common ever? I don't own one, but the 1911 Zeenut Halla would be tough to beat. |
can it be?
I have hundreds of favorite commons :(. Can it be an error card? If so then this one is up there near the top for me..
edited to add...woops, I guess Cy's ghost isn't a common..... . http://luckeycards.com/pt206ghostmultioverprint2.jpg |
Thank God I didn't have to follow that.

Bad Bill's expression looks like the photographer asked him what the square root of 1,783,999 was right before snapping the photo.

A lot of the cards posted I wouldn't consider "commons" in that they are not easily found so I take it that a "common" for the purposes of this thread is a ballplayer who isn't in the Hall of Fame. Now that that's out of the way here are some of my favorites (no way could I pick just one).

I have a tie between two. To start, my very first vintage card, N28 Captain Glasscock. I'm still ten at heart and how can you not love that name. Second is R312 of Van Lingle Mungo. Saw it at auction and thought it was a great image, had no idea how huge the card and holder were.

My fav. common from when i was a kid was the guy blowing the big bubble in the bubble blowing contest.. i dont remember his name, but it was mid 70's. We always tried to blow a bubble that big but never could.
Guess the only person who could blow bubbles better was Michael Jackson! |
No brainer for me...but there's a two-way tie.
First and foremost, it's a Gibson. Beyond that, I just love the simplicity of the image on the yellow background.
http://www.richardarmstrong.ca/T206_EPDG_Gibson.jpg And then there's ol' Bill. What I love about this card is that it's a Canadian-issued card featuring a Canadian-born player on a Canadian-based team. There aren't too many cards around that fit that collecting criteria. http://www.richardarmstrong.ca/C46_1_OHara.jpg Regards, Richard. |
Great Thread! Some of my fav. cards are commons...

John that Croft's looks trimmed on one side.:D
Is that how they are?? |
Let's just say I agree with Bruce B about the Oakes card. :D I believe I first
saw that card on the old Net54 forum, some 7 or 8 years ago & it was instantly added to my wantlist. I searched for a copy for a couple years with zero leads. Then, by chance, a collecting buddy on another forum posted an E92 Nadja Oakes as a new pickup. I PM'ed him an offer, and the rest is history. A few other fave commons follow the Oakes. http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/8401/nadjaoakes2.jpg http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/3...fojpfeffer.jpg http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/1...orizontals.jpg |
