Mid-grade commons or Low grade stars...
 

In general, what PREWAR cards do you think will hold value better in the future: midgrade crease-free commons or low grade HOFers/Stars...Thanks.

Both scenarios are "tied to the hip". If the lower grade stuff shoots up or down in value, then PSA 4 commons will go up or down as well. I don't see the distinction. However, if I were building a prewar collection with the idea of selling for monetary gain in the distant future. Then I would go with the lower grade hall-of-famers. Buying cards is the easy part of the flipping equation; it's the selling that creates a challenge for those flippers that are not battle-tested. Selling Cobb's, Mathewson's, Lajoie's and Waddell's in 2022 when you might have some arthritis, a couple of alimony payments under your belt, and the realization that you won't stay old forever, will be infinitely easier and receive alot more attention, then selling a bunch of PSA 4 and 5 "T206" Jones and/or Horrace Clarke cards.

I had a similar question about set building with the idea of selling for gain in the distant future. If I am just starting to build a new set, say 33 Goudey, would you start with the commons in higher grade (say PSA6) or the stars in lower grade (~PSA2)? Basically, say you gave yourself the budget to spend $1000 on this set for this year. Would you blow that on 1-2 cards, but stars or would you get 30 commons in the set (but all the while, looking for a great deal on a HOFer to pull the trigger if necessary)?

...accumulating groups of T206 cards -- raw, condition not important, T206 cards. When I began putting my latest set together, I started with SGC 60 commons and HOFers. But the quantity of those I was able to buy limited my enjoyment. I much prefer getting small hoards of T206 cards in any condition to getting 1 or 2 really nice examples. Of course, this has nothing to do with economic appreciation. But in terms of pure collecting enjoyment, getting a big stack of raw T206 cards is hard to compete with.

Here's 180+ T206 cards that I got a couple of weeks ago. So much fun...
