E220 Wambsganss question....

E220 Wambsganss on eBay right now for $450 (ouch). Way overpriced IMHO. Seller says its one of 2 (or so) cards that actually picture Wambsganss and not a teammate. There is also a '17 Boston Store on eBay for less - is it Wambsganss pictured? Thanks guys..

The 2010 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, one fine compilation of baseball card information, lists the Wambsganss card as using the photo of Fritz Coumbe. I think they're right. The card is listed under Sporting News M101-4.

This is not the only card that has a "Wambsganss" caption but does not actually depict Bill Wambsganss in the photo, a frustration to someone wanting a card of that unassisted triple play player from the 1920 World Series.

Actually

the Boston Store card does depict Wambsganss, the m101-4 does not.

Jon,

Recently, there were two other E220s of Wambsganss offered on eBay. One went for $20.00 and the other a bit more in price. Wambsganss appears in actual photos in at least the E220, the Boston Store/Collins McCarthy sets and the Maple Crispette set.

Todd, I thought the Boston Store card used the same image as the Sporting News card. I think I have one H801-8, and a handful of the Sporting News and Collins-McCarthy cards. I get them mixed up because I don't pay much / enough attention to them. So thanks for straightening me out. The Boston Store cards go hand in hand with Collins-McCarthy, and the two have nothing to do with the Sporting News cards.
