Anyone collect Negro League Photos?
I just picked up the 1943 Type 1 Satch photo below to start my collection. I think it is tremendous. The clarity, contrast and conent are spectacular..condition is ok. All in all, very happy to add this one to the collection.
I am going to KC in a couple weeks for business and going to find time for the museum. Something tells me after the visit, I will seek more photos and add one more addiction to my collection/life. I might have to give up popcorn to counter balance. Anyway, I would love to see other examples if people are willing to share. Thanks Ben http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/a...paigefront.jpg |
Ben -
That is a spectacular photo. Just beautiful. I don't collect Negro League photos... but after seeing that one - I think I should! great, great photo. |
WOW! That is an incredible photo! I don't have any Negro League photos but I would love to aquire some. They just don't fit the budget right now. Where did you get that one?
Have fun at the museum. I live in KC but have only been there once. It was a VERY enjoyable experience, though! I am also a member of the KC Baseball Historical Society and this month's guest speakers are former Negro Leaguers Jesse Rogers, Ullysses Hollimon, and DeMoris Smith (son of HOFer Horton Smith). I'm extremely excited about this meeting as the Negro Leagues have always fasinated me! :) |
Just gorgeous. A photo like that can take you back to another time.

Ben:
Very nice Paige photo, definitely much more challenging than finding one in a Cleveland Indians or St. Louis Browns uniform. I don't collect Negro League photos per say but do collect Negro League "collectibles" and thus I have a couple of photos as well as real photo postcards, which are similar. |
I agree with the other that that is a great photo. I think the condition isn't much a detriment to value.

Ben, Ben, Ben.
Your taste is questionable. Actually, you know it's not. As per your request, here are two of my favorite Negro League images of Josh Gibson. They're not Type 1s unfortunately, but they'll certainly make great paintings. That is, when I have free time. Which may be never (but that's a good thing). Anywho, moving on - the first shot is of the man coming home after a circuit-clout in Griffith Stadium, sometime in 1942. I'm not sure of the exact date, as it seems to have been lost to time. The second image is from Forbes Field, maybe from '43? I have to get some more information on it eventually (and certainly before it gets onto canvas). Either way, enjoy (I hope)! Thanks for the feedback
It makes me think I am not crazy. Well...maybe a bit o crazy with some taste. Anyone else have anything to post on here/show?
drc-The condtion was not a problem for me either(after all I bought it). It would obviously be better if the condition was stronger but as an old friend of mine always said: "find another one". You know who you are and it is a great quote as it relates to photos/value. Phil-Wouls love to see some of the items! Chris- That is great you get to do all of that! I am looking very forward to my experience. I bought this one on ebay. And oh yeah Graig....you seem to be able to find good images too I guess.might have an eye for it....keep workin at it buddy :) |

the beckett slabs..do they classify the photos in anyway? |
Ben:
Yes, Beckett labels them as Type I, Type II, etc. along with the year if definitive and player/subject name. |

Here is an original ACME News photo as a Newark Eagles player...from my collection. Autograph was there when I purchased it. I don't collect autographs, but don't have the heart to remove it!
