Just for Fun - T206 Hypothetical
Lookin for what you would do: You buy an old desk at an estate sale. While shuffling through some old "stuff" in the drawers, you find an unopened Sweet Caporal cigarette pack in great condition with a Dec. 1909 tax stamp on it. What would you do? Try to sell it, or open er' up???
|
Offer it to Mr. Canfield, that's what I'd do with it... see what he could offer in trade. He'd appreciate it more than most folks, if I had one that's where I'd try to send it. Maybe I could swap it for an few opened packages...
|
I'd open it up. I wouldn't be able to take the suspense of what might be in there.
I would then send it into be graded only to have it come back with "evidence of trimming".:D |
easy
100% Open it
|
Get it xrayed...
...or ultrasounded.... or whatevered.... and if there is a card in there, I have it encapsulated and sold. Probably an old general, or a fish or something....
|
I would find a way to make sure there was a card inside. Once proven a card was inside, I would take the unopened pack, securely put it into a little larger box and then put those boxes in my safety deposit box at the bank.
Later, if I needed the money (or my Niece or Nephews have inherited my colleciton) the intact cigarette box could be sold (and hopefully will be even MORE valuable since SO MANY PEOPLE just can't stand not knowing what is in a 100+ year-old unopened box). David |
Open it, and probably get a flounder or striped bass.
|
Open it, i am one of those guys that cant have unopened packs around... ive tried, i think my record is about 2 weeks keeping packs
|
Even with the assurance it contained a t206, the odds of pulling a card that would be worth more than the speculation that would drive the price of an unopened pack, are slim. However, I don't want to risk going to a mental hospital by selling it for a few thousands and hearing the buyer opened it and found a Wagner (or Plank, Doyle Nat'l, Magie, Cobb, etc.).
|
I'm in the middle on this one. However i agree with phil on the evidence of trimming :)

Thanks Frank!
Edited to fix the error Rob pointed out... |

Rob, has anyone ever told you that you look very similar to Jim VB???
Lovely Day... |
I would open it.
I recently opened an Obak pack I had for years, thinking there would be a mint card to grade. It was empty. If I had the pack, I would want to know what is inside. F.L. |
hypothetical?
Heck, that isn't a hypothetical situation at all...it happens 5 times a week or more on eBay.
Now if you want something hypothetical, change the scene to your grandfather's attic and try pulling out Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb and Cy Young without ever once getting a Lou Criger or a Harry Gaspar. Much more difficult.:D |
Open it, and smoke the cigarettes inside.
After smoking 100 year old tobacco, even a striped bass would probably look like a Wagner. |
