Hi - I'm still pretty new to the site and I love it. I thought I'd post a shot of and Old Judge I got graded. It seems to be one of the highest I can find in this new world of graded cards.

Thought you fellow pre-1900 collectors might like to see it.

From what I can find on psa and SGC - there are not many of these cards around at all. graded or not. Are these cards considered the most collectable or is there another pre-1900 set that has as many players but is more sought after?

I've was an active collector in the 70's and now that I am re-engaging with the hobby, I would like to hear your thoughts on this set. thanks

I just have a comment-that is one BEAUTIFUL card!!!!Congrats on the grade!!!

Sincerely,Clayton

That's is a truly amazing grade. I remember a few years ago I submitted two seemingly pristine N173's- possibly the best I had ever seen- to SGC to be graded, and both still only came back 80's. So an 84 is really up there. Beautiful card!

Wow, that's awesome! Congrats. If you'd prefer to have a new car, that could probably be arranged, but I might stick with the card :)

That is an awesome card, congrats!!

Is there a reason SGC didn't list the "batting" variation on the flip? I am not an expert on OJ's by any means, just wondering if that was standard practice for the 1888-89 set.

Great looking N173 and my favorite 19th century set. Not sure why there aren't many graded, I have 6 with 2 of them still raw. Sometimes I think the SGC holder overwhelms the card sizewise and thats probably why I haven't submitted the other 2 yet.

Congrats, you must be a proud parent! It's a beauty!

Nice card. I would, howver, take Seth's offer of the car. No one I know cares what grade SGC gives a cabinet--the only grades people I know care about are nice or not nice. I don't think you could find an N173 collector who obsesses over grades (or grades his cabinets for that matter).

I do think N173 collectors will pay a premium for a very strong photo, more than they would care about whether it is a 70, an 80, or an 84. But that takes nothing away from this very nice card.

Whoah, I was just saying it will bring a nice return at auction, I wasn't offering myself! I doubt my 2000 civic will do.

Great looking card, but does it have any sharp corners? From the scan it does not look like it to justify the 84. That being said it is a wonderful card.

Lee, these weren't made w/ sharp corners. They had slightly rounded corners as this one does. Nice card!

Awesome looking cabinet. I took a quick look at the SGC pop. report and see there are now 4 SGC 84s with none higher. My black mount Hardy Richardson I've posted in the past is one of them. The others are of Dan Brouthers and Harry Wright (nice cards). There are not that many collectors who collect N173s as they are relatively rare and expensive although some of the assembled collections are quite sizable. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Detroit players. I have graded all of mine (only 4 of them) and will likely continue to do so. To me, a graded example is worth more than an ungraded example, but that is just me.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone how many N173s have been graded by SGC and PSA?

SGC has graded 110; PSA has graded 10.
