FWIW, I've done some further research into this issue and I am virtually certain it is a 1959 issue, not the 1940s. The Fraternal Order of Eagles established its sports HOF in 1955 and cards have been found for the 1955 and 1959 inductees.

Honus Wagner
On page 123 of the 2010 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards they are listed as 1940`s. Also click on Old Cardboard (All Others) and they list them as around 1946. :)

Regardless of the year of issue (1959 or 1946), these are extremely rare "cards". (They are not cards, they are not premiums... I'm not sure what to call them, so I just called them "cards".) I have been looking for the Grove from this issue for the past 8 or 10 years. I finally found one last year. So, in terms of rarity, they are tough to find no matter which year they were issued in.
I'm not the one selling the cards here... but I thought I would throw my two cents in any way... Adam is very knowledgable about these types of cards, so I trust what he has to say... But, these "cards" are hard to find in any condition... |

Brad, Thanks for the post. Yes they are hard to find what ever year they are. I would like to find the Musial but I have never seen one. If you come across one please let me know. Thanks again, Marc ( Have a good weekend!)

Two Musials sold last year on eBay... I believe there are two different versions of the Musial... Thicker and thinner cardboard versions.... I know who sold them... Maybe I can at least get you a scan of one...

I realize the resources noted list them as 1940s issues but the FOE did not elect the subjects to their sports HOF until 1955 and 1959, respectively, so there is no way that they are 1940s issues. SCD also wrongly lists a Bob Fitzsimmons card when he was never elected to their HOF.
Ditto Brad on the scarcity. There was a burst of these on Ebay over the last 6 mos or so, from two sellers. I grabbed what I could as fast as I could. Got lucky as heck and filled out all the boxers. |
Dempsey
There is also a Jack Dempsey that is not listed in the reference guide that someone had and I missed it! I don`t know if you knew about the Dempsey. What did you pay for your cards that you have? If you don`t mind me asking? Thanks, Marc

I didn't miss the Dempsey...
The boxers are Sullivan, Jeffries, Dempsey, Gibbons (all 1955 inductees) and Baer (1959 inductee). Prices were all over the place, from about $12 on a few under-the-radar sales up to $150. Conditions were varied as well. Here is a link to the FOE web site listing of their sports HOF. As you can see, the known cards all date to the 1955 and 1959 inductees, which nails the issue date as far as I am concerned since you can't issue what doesn't exist and this HOF didn't exist in the 1940s. I haven't seen a Thorpe...yet: http://www.foe.com/about-us/sportshof.aspx |
