A bit off topic...

Hey all,

Sorry for the off topic nature of this post, but I was looking for some help. I was wondering if any of you can recommend a good book on Bobby Jones, preferably anything relating to the '27 British Golf Open. I'm to do a painting of a scene from that competition, and I was hoping to land some information about the event. I would prefer to read a blow-by-blow account with less fluff, something that can give me information about the weather, course/holes, etc.

Absolutely any information anyone can provide is GREATLY appreciated, as I know next to nothing about golf!

Thanks,

Graig

Hiya Graig-
I don't know much about golf. I would expect there are good books about Bobby Jones. I accessed the New York Times on-line archives and found a dozen or so contemporary articles about his performance at the 1927 British Open and will e-mail them to you. I haven't read the articles, just skimmed them, but hopefully there might be something of use to you.

Down the Fairway and Golf is my Game are two good books for Bobby. The former has been reprinted; I'm not sure about the latter, although it is generally available on the used book sites.

Here's a photo of Jennifer's painting of Bobby. It was sold at the Air Canada Classic circa 1998, when Vancouver actually staged a PGA golf tournament

Graig,
There is a book called "Grand Slam" (2004) by Mark Frost who does a very good job of detailing Jones' Grand Slam year of 1930 as well as his other majors as well if I remember correctly (I loaned the book out...can't remember to whom!). IMO, Frost is the best writer on golf alive today. He also wrote "The Greatest Game Ever Played" which along with "The Glory of Their Times" are the best sports books I've ever read. Anyway, Frost is very descriptive and thorough and will make you feel as though you are there. Good luck and thanks for reminding me to get my book back from....? Bert

Thanks for all of the tips, everybody! Thankfully, my local library has a ton of golf books at their disposal, so I would imagine that they'll have at least one or two of them. I don't necessarily want to go out buying anything yet, as the shelves are really starting to overflow with all of the baseball stuff I've picked up over the past few years...

Max - how large is the Jones painting?
