When it comes to minor leagues, I'm kinda a Pacific Coast League guy (practically the big leagues back in the day), so all my choices reflect this:
1911 Pacific Coast Biscuit (D310) Weaver 1911 Zeenut Weaver (the best defiant Weaver card ever, by the way) 1909 Obak Gandil 1911 Obak Weaver 1911 Zeenut Halla 1925 Zeenut P. Waner 1914 Zeenut Bancroft 1918 Zeenut Lefty O'Doul 1922 Zeenut Jim Thorpe 1933-36 Zeenut J.Dimaggio Brian |

Does anyone consider the '33 Goudey Tris Speaker to be a minor league card, since he is depicted as part-owner/manager of the Kansas City Blues? If so, I would add that one (assuming pre-WWII, not WWI).
Cheers, Blair |
Jon:
Louisville was actually a Major League team at the time that Wagner was pictured on the Henry Reccius card. |
FYI, Rusie N172s are all major league cards
|
Jay:
You're right, thanks for the correction on that. |
Can't think of 10, but here's a unique Minor League card
The 1904 Buffalo Bisons team card. They were the Eastern League Champions in 1904....the year the World
Series was not played in the Major Leagues. This "unique" card was a "walk-in" at the Cooperstown Show in the early 1990's. I traded a bunch of 1950's cards for it. <img src="http://i529.photobucket.com/albums/dd339/tz1234zaz/b1904buffalo.jpg" alt="[linked image]"> TED Z |
If Speakers' '33 Goudey makes the cut, then I'd vote for one of the T204s (Burkett and J. Collins).
|
I guess then the T206 J. Collins (Minneapolis) would work also.............
|
In order
T210 Joe Jackson 1915 Zeenut McMullin 1915 Zeenut Williams 1915 Zeenut Risberg 1916 Zeenut Risberg E100 Type 1/2 Weaver T210 Stengel D310 Weaver T212 Weaver T212 Gandil |
1911 Zeenut Bohen (the Holy Grail of PCL cards)
|
How about any n338-1 or n321 Hess? All are very rare.

Nice additions on the Pebble Beach cards, they are great. Disappointed I forgot about the T4 Obak, and disappointed that Leon brought up the e221 Weaver.
We also forgot the Gilmartin Weaver. |

Thanks! |
Bohen is the biggest stumbling block to completing the 1911 Zeenut set, which is being pursued by several board members. So in that instance it would be a question of scarcity and price, though there are obviously much more expensive cards that have been listed in this thread.
|
How about an N172 California League card? Most are one of a kind.
|
In no particular order:
1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth 1910 T210-8 Joe Jackson 1922 Zeenut Jim Thorpe 1921 Tip Top Lefty Grove 1916 Zeenut Jimmy Claxton 1910 T210-6 Casey Stengel 1912 HRK Dave Bancroft 1911 Obak Cabinets Buck Weaver 1919 Zeenuts Fatty Arbuckle 1915 Zeenuts Fred McMullin Honarable Mention: 1887-90 N172 Kid Nichols 1928 PCL Exhibits Earl Averill 1933-36 Zeenuts Joe DiMaggio (should probably be higher but I personally have never cared much for the two DiMaggio poses) |
Tony, in regard to the 1911 Zee Bohen card there is only either one and a half or two and a half known to exist (at least that is my understanding). The half that I am talking about is a copy of the card that was trimmed around the players image (die-cut) that Lew sold a few years back. It is essentially an impossible card and I could only speculate what one would sell for should one come up for sale (a whole one that is).

Forgot about Buck's T4 and Gilmartin. I'd put that in my top ten too.
|
Additional N172s
Besides the aforementioned Kid Nichols I would include:
Jake Beckley - Saint Louis Whites Bobby Lowe - Milwaukee Brewers Deacon McGuire - Toronto Canucks Orator Shafer - Des Moines Prohibitionists George Treadway - Saint Paul Apostles, Denver Grizzlies All five of these guys were solid players and one wound up being a HOFer. |
Zeenut -1911 Bohen
In specific regards as to scarcity of the 1911 Zeenut Bohen card, Mark M. hinted a while back on this board that there are plenty of PCL collectors out there (and he would have the knowledge) with extensive collections of Zeenuts that either choose not to participate on the board or never visit. The Bohen is scarce, but I have a feeling that there are more than just a handful of them out there somewhere.

I think Mr. Macrae went a little farther with his comments regarding the Bohen. Here is his response to my post about the existence of the Bohen. Guess he told me. :( "Steve, Not to browbeat the point, or you, but the Bohen full card exists in a handfull or two Zeenut collections. The trimmed 'marionette' version that Lipset offered several years ago had no nameplate, so a complete example had to exist with which to compare the marionette. Collectors would not have known how the caption read (which is the most important part of Zeenuts). There are a number of advanced collectors that do not read this board, post scans, or 'brag' about their collections. If you really want an image, contact the California Historical Society on Mission Street in San Francisco. They have one in their collection (top trimmed, but identifiable) that they can photograph for you. It usually takes 6-8 weeks and they will charge you about $50 for the service... Mark" |
The Zeenut '23 Waner and Zeenut '29 Gomez should be in the discussion.

Pick any 10 of the 12 known E222s, and you have my Top 10 pre-War minor league cards!!
|
Rhett:
Good job on the Grove, I forgot about that one. I'll use the Grove to replace the N172 Rusie on my Top 10 list, since the Rusie was not a minor league card. |
My personal list (what I'd like to own):
1. 1914 Baltimore Ruth 2. T210 Joe Jackson 3. T210 Casey Stengel 4. Zeenut Thorpe 5. Pebble Beach DiMaggio 6. 1918 Zeenut Lefty O'Doul 7. Zeenut Heilmann 8. Tip Top Grove 9. Zeenut Arbuckle 10. Mothers Cookies Chuck Connors |
