Identification of postcard (not Toronto with Joe Kelley)

This was sold as a "Toronto Eastern League Nap Lajoie 1917" postcard on ebay,, with the rear of the card having identified Joe Kelley as pictured in the second row, second on the left.

With Mark's assistance, he confirmed it was indeed not Joe Kelley pictured. (Nap of course nowhere to be present)

There are obviously too many players for one team. It's a neat vintage card in any event, with some subjects holding baseball equipment (chest protector, bat, glove) and one subject holding a Spalding book. Cute dog too. The card is mailed to Toronto, but the photo was taken in Chicago. As well, there is a photographer's studio stamp from Maine.

Any thoughts on who these men may be? (I've already eliminated Joe Jackson, Jim Thorpe and Byron Mclaughlin)

A larger scan of the postcard may be viewed here front and back.

PC...

None of the Mugs pop out to me as anyone, except for the guy holding the dog. I believe that is Jimmy Clausen, QB at Notre Dame.

Happy New Year !

BTW - the photo was taken in Lincoln Park in Chicago in front of the Augustus St. Gaudens statue of Lincoln seen in the background. The scene there today is virtually the same.

I see Ryan Christoff third from left.

The man in the second row, third from the left (in the white hat), looks like he could be Miller Huggins.

Just saw the bio of Augustus St. Gaudens on Ovation. Truely awesome American artist. If any one gets a chance to catch it on TV it's worth the hour.

The postcard is from 1907 or 1908. It's a "divided back" postcard (line down the middle for the address on one side and text on the other), which started in March of 1907. New 1c stamp designs were released in Dec 1908. There's always the possibility that an older stamp was used later than Dec, but I'd date the postcard in that 21 month window, Mar 07 to Dec 08.

You think it was mailed 10 years AFTER it was printed? The post mark is clearly from January 8, 1918.

Fred has it right, May 1st 8:16 PM.

The cancellation stamp doesn't show at the bottom which is where the date would have been.

The scan below (from ebay) isn't an identical stamp but pretty similar to what this one would have looked like if complete.

What Fred said.
Here is the back of another postcard mailed from Chicago (Nov 2, 1910) to illustrate the postmark.

It's Polar Bear by a nose. Curses, Penultimate once again.

Got it. Thanks. (That damn Archive!)

David's pic shows the new 1c stamp issued in Dec 1908.

Another observation is that the pic was obviously taken in winter, but probably not the dead of winter. Everyone has coats, no foliage, but no snow, probably in the Oct-Nov timeframe.

If it was mailed in May of 07, the photo would be after the 1906 season and if May of 08, after the 1907 season.
