1933 C.A. Briggs Co. (Sports) Ruth and timimg...

It's no secret I like to collect type cards. For several years the C.A. Briggs Co. Ruth card has eluded me. Another board member has had one for sale (not sure if he still does) for around 2k in fair condition, from what I remember. I never could quite get to that price on that card to make the deal. A year ago one came up in a Barry Sloate auction and I knew I had a shot at it. The only problem is that another board member felt the same way. He ended up winning our, hard fought, battle. I walked away without the card again. These things rarely come up for sale but I just figured I would wait for the next. Recently one came up on ebay. The seller and I corresponded and he said he had a $350 BIN on ebay but then changed it to a straight auction. Of course I made an offer that if he were to sell it before auction end I would like a shot at it. He said he would prefer to let it go and I was happy to have another shot at one. I guess timing is everything. This also shows how a very thinly traded series can have dramatic price swings. I guess I am glad I waited....Here is the Sloate auction, the ebay auction and my new card. Also, if anyone has any other C.A. Briggs sports cards I would love to see them....

If memory serves, you and the winning bidder went back and forth for most of the last few hours. That is the perfect storm for an auctioneer. In the ebay sale, that didn't happen. That's why I always recommend that collectors be patient and not make foolish and impulsive decisions...of course I never said that when I was conducting auctions, but I can say it now.:)

Hey Leon,
I saw that Ruth too, but never with the $350 buy it now. It never would have lasted another day with a BIN that low. Great pickup. As for the other CA Briggs cards, there is a football card in the set that shows a player punting the ball. Some people think it resembles Red Grange. Sadly, the back of the card does not refer to Grange, like the Ruth card mentions him. Way to save yourself $2k and get a nicer condition card. -Kyle |
Leon
Nice card Leon. I rarely see the other cards from that series and know a few board members who have some. That Ruth in sloate looks familiar.
BTW- I received the card in the mail. Please let me know if you received your package. Toby |

Hi Leon---congrats on that very nice Ruth--in that condition I thought it was a great bargain pickup---I only have a few of the "major" sports from this Briggs set, but it's still one of my favorite sets

Leon, congrats on a great pick-up. Being a football guy, my only '33 Briggs card is the football one. - Mike
