T206 Wiltse Portrait No Cap - Missing Bottom of Y in "N.Y."
Is your Wiltse missing the bottom of the Y in "N.Y." like this Piedmont 150?
I wasn't able to find another like it on eBay. I wonder if it's a one-off mistake from something on the stock when printed, or if it's a printing plate based error that we'll see on other cards? http://joesvintagesportscards.com/Me...251234-007.jpg |
Trae
My Wiltse Piedmont 150 has the full "Y". Jantz |
Thank you, Jantz. I noticed in the example above that the dots abbreviating "N. Y." are also missing, or at least very faint.

Trae--
I also have a P 150 "Hooks" and the print is bright, strong & very complete. On a similar note: I have both Fred Clarke poses. The Portrait card has just "Clarke-Pittsburg", while the batting pose has "F. Clarke-Pittsburgh". Are they ALL this way? (I have them both pictured on my "Find" thread) |
Yes, the Clarkes are always that way.

Thanks Barry!
This T206 stuff is all new to me, but if it wasn't for what I've read & tried to absorb over the last few yrs here on N54 I never would have considered buying them to begin with! |
You're welcome Fred. T206 is a great set, and there is plenty to learn about it.

Card reminds me a lot of Hemphill. About 2% of T206 Hemphills are missing the lower part of the first H. That particular card never got too many people excited ... although I think it's cool....just like the new 'variation' discovered.

t206 HEMPHILL
SCOTT!!
you're right about the hemphills....i have 2, that are clearly missing the bottom part of "h" and "e"......hank and i have bid for them in the past... interestingly, mine have 2 different backs, a sov and pied i beleive, i'll check These anomalies with partial lettering seem to be minor defects on the print fonts for the captions. We can "assume" that something, or wear affected them causing partial omissions of the letters. This is similiar to the "nodgrass" but with less publicity. One of the hemphills did cost me, but the other was the price of a common cause noone noticed it. btw, does anyone have a hemphill(missing part of the "h" and "e") like this??(sorry no scan but i'll try to post) Trae, i'll check for wiltse on my end.. johnny |

Here's a scan of mine. This one was acquired in a trade with Scott and Hank. I am sure they are on Ebay but I have never seen one. Full Y's on the Wiltses.

Very cool. I was not aware of the Hemphill "half H".
My opinion is that if the Murr'y, Shappe, Nodgrass, Mitchell "Toront", etc. cards bring a premium, which they of course do, then the Hemphill's, Randall's, Wiltse's (assuming another surfaces), etc. of the set should bring their premiums too. They're no different as far as the source, and scarcity, of the variation goes. Yes, I own the Wiltse. :) |
