I think the stains on the more expensive one made it more valuable.

Ahh yes the stains!!!

Could this be a result of shill bidding and if so how can this be controlled??

The Ebay's bidding system seem somewhat controlled at least you can view and notice shill bidding... Or could this all be due to two collectors battling it out for one extremely rare card!!!

I know Heritage well and no, they don't shill bid, or at least I have never seen anything making me think that. Most likely once one person had theirs they weren't in the hunt anymore. That is the main problem with really rare issues. Many times the market is so thin it only takes one person to drop out and the price goes way down. That is also the reason that realized prices need to be taken with a grain or two of salt. All imho..

yeppers....same cryptic sarcasm that keeps people away....genius

Actually, there was no sarcasm intended, Leon. There really have been numerous posts on this board touting the integrity of auction houses -- or at least one particular former one -- that turned out to be severely lacking in that regard.

If pointing that out is being sarcastic, then guilty as charged.
