Lelands.com Auction Closes Tomorrow 9pm

Hey
Just a heads up to remind you that our big auction is closing tomorrow night
Initial bids must be in by 9pm and it should go fairly late (lets hope not too late!)
There is some pretty great stuff in there and some pretty great deals too
Good luck in the auction and thanks for listening
Sincerely
Josh Evans
Chairman

The photo below left (lot 849) - labeled as Miller Huggins (current bid is $270) is actually Al Bridwell. The exact photo was used in the 1906 Spalding Guide's 1905 Cin. team headshot composite where it was correctly labeled as Bridwell, below center. Also note the similarity to Bridwell's Colgan chip, below right. :)

bmarlowe1 12-03-2009 06:38 PM

Item 988 is also interesting. Unidentified are Hap Felsch (far right) and defense atty William Fallon, just left of Felsch.

Item 986 labeled Felsch and Riseberg - Riseberg is really Cicotte.

This is my favorite lot. On so many levels. Poor taste combined with a misleading description -- it's got everything!

GoldenAge50s 12-03-2009 07:30 PM

WOW!! $3500 & counting for a drain cover! Wish I had the other 5 so I could say I have a better chance of it being the right one!

I agree Jeff--very ambiguous listing at best!

Jeff, good luck, hope you win it.

Hey Peter - you didn't say "teflon" yet :D

Yeah but it is just so difficult to top his offering in 2005 of debris from the plane crash which took Roberto Clemente's life.

calvindog 12-03-2009 08:01 PM

Greg, that's exactly what I thought of when I read the description of the drain cover. Such glee in the description! Ahhh...money!

Peter_Spaeth 12-03-2009 08:11 PM

What's next I wonder? The baseball that killed Ray Chapman? The one that struck Herb Score, or Tony Conigliaro? Juan Marichal's bat? Ray Fosse's blood-splattered uniform?

calvindog 12-03-2009 08:19 PM

No, the baseball that may have killed Ray Chapman, the one that may have struck Herb Score, or Tony Conigliaro, the bat that may have been Juan Marichal's and possibly Ray Fosse's uniform.

calvindog 12-03-2009 08:30 PM

Another funny -- and very wrong -- description

http://www.lelands.com/Auction.aspx/...ed/51897/page1

calvindog 12-03-2009 08:34 PM

And another false description!

http://www.lelands.com/Auction.aspx/...se-Plate/page1

License plate from the 70s? "Early" in DiMag's signing career? Too bad the red, white and blue NY license plate didn't come into being until 1986!

Also from the description: "Signed early in his signing career as he would never have signed it later." --- So, since it has now been established that the plate was not signed until later in DiMag's "signing career" can we presume it is a fake?

HRBAKER 12-03-2009 08:56 PM

Jeff,
Don't get so mired down in the details. :p

Peter those are lots 1 through 5 for his first auction in 2010.

Kawika 12-04-2009 02:51 AM

Check out Lot 1405.

Looks like it shows original game-used lynching marks; that's got to drive up the value.

calvindog 12-04-2009 06:18 AM

Another class act.

Don't know what's worse...
That they are offering lot #1405 or that some people have bid on it

Republicaninmass 12-04-2009 09:35 AM

Check out Lot 1405.

His write up could have been worse

"not sure what to get the tough to shop for white supremasist on your Christamas list who has everything, here is the perfect idea"

I guess the disclaimer is supposed to make it better

HRBAKER 12-04-2009 09:59 AM

No intent to offend, but certainly an intent to profit which some might say is offensive.

"Reach logo was replaced after initial season usage"

Peter_Spaeth 12-04-2009 11:33 AM

You would think Josh would have had the good sense to turn down that lot.

bmarlowe1 12-04-2009 11:36 AM

Could Miller Huggins be under that hood?

Maybe. But the ears don't look right to me!

1405 -- Is the insignia original, or was it professionally added from another robe ??

We'll probably see this in next months Coach's Corner auction with a Ty Cobb signature on it.

GrayGhost 12-04-2009 02:06 PM

Harsh group of people on here, wow. That said, Josh Evans doesn't always exude class in his dealings, for sure.

If you haven't read the excellent book "Miracle Ball" bout Thomsons HR ball, there's some interesting stuff in there about Lelands part in a news story on the ball.

He does have some great stuff in his auction too. It's all about the money, just that sometimes people are blinded by it, and their judgement is clouded.

bmarlowe1 12-04-2009 02:16 PM

>>>Harsh group of people on here, wow. ....

Scott -
So tell me why does the Leland's web-site still show Al Bridwell as Miller Huggins? How long should that take to fix?

calvindog 12-04-2009 03:32 PM

I agree with Mark here. I don't expect Josh to be anything but a vulgar capitalist -- that's kind of expected with the territory. It's the outright deceptions in his descriptions which are so troubling. Why is it so easy for these guys to lie publicly? I'm still trying to imagine what he was thinking when he wrote that a Cobb check written out to and endorsed by "The Family" was Cobb's actual family. Did Cobb's family incorporate itself under the name "The Family" in order to cash his checks?

Anthony S. 12-04-2009 04:11 PM

My catalog just arrived today. Not enough time to read it and bid. That's a shame because that Klan outfit would have looked great under 1600 feet of water in the middle of Lake Tahoe.

Rob D. 12-04-2009 04:32 PM

A catalog delivered on the day the auction closes? That's aweful.

My catalog arrived today as well! Oh well, I guess we both missed the boat.

Lovely Day...

rman444 12-04-2009 05:14 PM

That's a lot better than some of my Clean Sweep catalogs that arrive about a week after the auctions have ended.

barrysloate 12-04-2009 05:28 PM

"Aweful" has just become the accepted spelling of that word.

And Anthony- "definately" is used on the board all the time. That word is nearly always spelled incorrectly.

But the most common error of all, without question, is the misuse of "its" and "it's".

Peter_Spaeth 12-04-2009 05:37 PM

usage these days

its definately aweful

barrysloate 12-04-2009 05:39 PM

Three out of three ain't bad.:)

brickyardkennedy 12-04-2009 06:07 PM

Their's no excuse for there misspellings.

Rickyy 12-04-2009 06:19 PM

Yeah that Klan outfit..I don't know..not in good taste at all...but indirectly if I buy a card of a known racist like Ty Cobb, Ben Chapman, Cap Anson..I'm feeling like I'm sort of doing the same thing.. :(

>>> Calvindog:Why is it so easy for these guys to lie publicly?

Yes - exactly. That's why I am so glad to see the response on this thread. I will shortly post a long list of errata for the current Legendary photo auction - including stuff that's wrong that they know is wrong (becasue I told them face to face) and won't change.

Ah now that you have mentioned Legendary, it is time to honor your request and say: TEFLON.

prewarsports 12-04-2009 09:41 PM

If you dont want to buy a card of a racist than you better just not buy any card of anyone from before WW2 because on some level, they all were racist because it was accepted in their society. I am not saying it was right or that they were good people, just that it was the norm 100 years ago and not the exception.

teetwoohsix 12-04-2009 09:52 PM

prewarsports-you said exactly what I was thinking.Back then it was the norm, keep in mind we're talking 100 years ago..............

Peter - you are certainly right with respect to Lelands, Legendary, and Heritage.

But Net54 posts and emails have resulted in corrections (and even refunds) from REA, Hunt, 19th Century Only, and SGC (if I left anyone out, I apologize). The responses have always been polite, even appreciative.

Late edit: - let me revise the above slightly - back in April, Legendary was responsive to one of my posts and corrected errors on some Hermes Ice Cream pin-backs. But recently they had been unresponsive.

kylebicking 12-05-2009 07:06 AM

anyone win anything?

Anyone win anything in the auction? I got three emails saying I won the one lot I bid on, but also three saying I did not win it.

bcbgcbrcb 12-05-2009 08:32 AM

I can't believe that it's finally over, 5:20am EST must be a new all-time record!

I went to bed at 10:30pm EST got almost a full night's sleep, woke up at about 4:15am EST to check the status of my bid, saw that I was outbid but the auction appeared to still be active. Thus, I placed one more bid at 4:30am and ended up winning the lot, Willie Wells Negro League photo.
