1934 Goudey Question???
 

In a prior thread, Frank Ward was kind enough to give some insight on a 1934 Goudey card (in relation to authenticity). Here is his statement...

This is where I look... edges of photo area, colors dont line up perfectly (red boxes), the bottom of the image area is usually cropped and the thin line under Gehrigs face and the bottom of the "y" is cut off (cropped).

Also the uniform and the border blend together good, most reprints will crop the photo and add a new white border (too white compared to the rest of the card)

But a homemade fake (inkjet printer glued front and back together) made from a scan of an authentic card will look authentic

With this new found knowledge (I know, it is a dangerous thing...), I am now questioning my own partial '34 Goudey set. It seems I have six cards with the "y" in "says" cut off at the bottom. I've also seen a couple of graded 1934 Goudey cards with the "y" cut off at the bottom. Here is a pic of an ebay auction (ends today) with some beaters, but the "y" is cut off at the bottom.

In Frank's statement, he only specified that this is one of the things to look for........I have one simple question to the board or Frank for that matter. Are there authenic 1934 Goudey cards with the "y" cut off at the bottom???

Those look fine and 99% sure you have no worries on those. Just make sure when you get your Gehrigs they are graded because there are a ton of reprints out there and some look pretty good.

My bad.

I mainly use the bottom etc. cropped info for the Gehrigs in the set. The most common reprints doctored.

I should have worded it better. Obviously from your scans the bottom varies alot with different cards. I guess you should compare each players card separately as the design varries a bit.

It is one of the few things I look at, but not the only spot. Thanks for pointing this out, now I know it is not 100% a fact that proves a reprint from the R320 set.

The R319 reprints are easier :)



In general, most reprints will have some or all of the edges of the photo cropped. Use google images to compare

On this type of reprint (#61 below) the top edge of photo is the easiest to see (hat button cropped)

PS the side edges may be a better place to look overall (red boxes in the first example), the colors should ever so slightly not line up razor straight along the edges.

There are so many types of reprints, some better than others.
