Opinions on this 1941 Play Ball #71 DiMaggio
Front and back scans of this card, which I purchased from a high-rep eBay seller this week.
I've had the following comments from outside Net54: 1. GOOD: Wear pattern resembles other authentic PBs 2. BAD: Concern about the eraser mark on the back (could obscure "REPRINT" mark) 3. GOOD: Eraser mark is higher that known reprint cards What do folks think of the card? (Click for larger scan.) I have a couple of days to return it if no good. <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/4gS0XzEQ8E9a-v1dKKVqyg?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWGxunB54H8jAE&feat=embed website"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_gnsNN-zOZ0g/SxE5zIgB1VI/AAAAAAAABBo/5xij4K6iEmc/s144/JoeDfront.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/obc.spike/ThingsDoneToCards?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWGxunB54H8jAE&fe at=embedwebsite">1941 Play Ball #71</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/6TTdg8BYQ0pf8g-SbRklxg?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWGxunB54H8jAE&feat=embedwe bsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_gnsNN-zOZ0g/SxE5zHo0YtI/AAAAAAAABBk/q0_jg6gW_9A/s144/JoeDback.jpg" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/obc.spike/ThingsDoneToCards?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWGxunB54H8jAE&fe at=embedwebsite">Card back</a></td></tr></table> |
The erasure looks like someone was trying to get rid of some writing which can still be seen not to eliminate a "reprint" mark.

I'm not an expert on Play Balls but the card looks okay to me based on the scans provided.
|
Cards with symectrical rounded corners always concern me.
|
Yeah, the rounded corners caught my eye right away too! They were the first thing I checked, even before worrying about the writing or anything else.
I spent a while comparing edges, card stock, and corner wear to the rest of my 1941 PB set, and concluded it matches up with other low-grade cards pretty well. Thanks for mentioning it. |
Its authentic, I dont see any red flags :)
|
It's real.

"1941"
It appears that "1941" was handwritten on the reverse, and subsequently was attempted to be erased. The "1941" can be seen very faintly. The card looks to be authentic, albiet marked.

Looks ok from scans.. the wrinkles on the bottom, I have not seen on reprints before, as I feel it is more from the card stock which makes that wrinkles.
I am by no means an expert of playballs. |
Thanks for writing in, everyone. Good to hear that it looks legit!
