Some random thoughts and observations. Last summer as I was heading down Interstate 95 heading for Wrightsville Beach, much to my surprise, I crossed over Contentnea Creek near Wilson, North Carolina. I was wondering if anyone knows where Factory 12, 4th district, N.C. was (or is) located? That's the factory where Contentnea cigarettes were produced. By the way, I did discover that the word Contentnea is an old Tuscaroran (Iroqouis) name for "fish passing by"

I believe the factory was indeed somewhere in Wilson, NC. Jon's image of the cigarette pack shows the trademark of the manufacturer - a shield with the letters EN TC. EN TC stands for Erwin Nadal Tobacco Company, which was located in Wilson, but that's as much as I've ever been able to find out.

Interestingly enough, Carolina Brights were also produced in Wilson, NC

There is a railroad intersection just south of Wilson called Contentnea Junction. Sounds like a nice little sidetrip next time I pass that way. Who knows, maybe the factory is still there.

There was also a booklet put out circa 1910 by the Nadal tobacco co. with illustrations of most but not all of the players. I had the opportunity to see it this summer at the National

Contentnea cigarettes were named from the Tobacco farming region surrounding the Contentnea Creek in Eastern North Carolina.
They were produced at Factory 12, 4th Dist. N.C. (most likely this plant was in nearby Wilson, NC).

Hi Joe,
Thanks for digging up this thread on one of my favorite series--it made for good viewing/reading while visiting my daughter here in card-less Iowa. I, too, have crossed Contentnea Creek heading south on Rte.95 near Wilson, and am glad to have the information concerning that region and their tobacco.

I tried to find some Black Friday specials on vintage cards here in Des Moines, but to my great surprise there were none! Back to the refrigerator for more cold turkey.

Here is a link to the supposed factory in Wilson, note that Carolina Brights may have also been made there. Rereading it, this may not be the exact building but does reference it in Wilson.

T209 Contentnea
 

Some really great photos, thanks for posting the link to them.

The Contentnea creek region was known for its "golden leaf" tobacco....hence, Carolina Brights. In the early 1900's,
the cigarettes produced in this region were labelled "North Carolina Brights". When the American Tobacco Co. (ATC)
acquired this brand, ATC (circa 1908-1910) switched production to the Richmond, VA plant (Factory 25), and drop-
ped the "North" lettering from this brand's name.


Question for Jon Canfield, or any one.......

Have you ever come across T-packs labelled "North Carolina Brights" ?

If so, it would be interesting to see if they are identified....Factory 12, 4th Dist. N.C.

I have several packs and envelopes from 1898 to 1903 that all have "Carolina Brights" as the brand and Fact 444 4th dist of NC.

Thanks for posting your envelope pix of the Wilson factory. Regarding the name "North Carolina Brights",
I read that in old ATC document. But, you are our Carolina Brights expert; therefore, I stand corrected
on what I stated was the old brand name in the prior post here.

Ted - I've never seen anything labeled "North Carolina Brights" so not sure I'm too much of a help here.

Notice the similar shield with the interlocking WWTC forWells Whitehead Tobacco Company.

That is a nice looking Contentnea pack .....
