Question about T215 Type 1 and 2

Is one type more rare than the other? I know that both types are rare to begin with, but is one series harder to find than the other? Does type one carry a premium over type 2? Or vice versa? Any idea how many of each card there might be out there? Thanks guys.

Re:Question about T215 Type 1 and 2

I have always thought of the type 1s as slightly more difficult. But since the cards are so scarce to begin with, the difference is almost imperceptible. I doubt it's much of a factor in the price.

I have heard that Type 1's are a bit more scarce. I have owned 4 total, and it's a 50/50 split (Type 1/Type 2) so far.

IMO Type 1's do carry a premium because some collectors consider them to be a T206 back. When I was working on my T206 backs set, I went for a type I as an included back. I thought it was necessary to pay a bit more to insure that I did get it.

My experiences are about the same. I have seen a few more type 2's but I think both are close. From what I have seen it's about 70% type 2's and 30% type 1's.......but again, I would guess they are fairly close in in population in reality. I have not seen too much of a premium paid for type 1's. Both are what I would consider scarce....I don't own the Griffith anymore

Thanks for the input guys. I didn't know some see the backs as partial to the T206 set, but I can see why for Type 1's. Same font and color.

FWIW, SGC and PSA have graded a total of 72 T215-1 and 112 T215-2 cards.

Thanks for posting those pops. Do you happen to know if SGC keeps a record of crossovers?

calvindog 11-13-2009 05:55 PM

Nope

FWIW, I've only got one (ungraded) and it's a Type II.

During the time I have collected Red Cross it seems type 1s are slightly tougher but not by much. They are both tough and probably equal in numbers.

Hey Jim
As mentioned above, the stats of the graded ones show about 65% type 2's and 35% type 1's. That coincides almost exactly with what my sightings mentioned above have been. I would conclude that there are a few more type 2's and type 1's. That being said both are very scarce compared to most other cards we collect. Happy collecting....

We both know that is what is graded and we both have raw in our collections but I do agree with you.

and yes happy collecting-I mean happy back collecting...:D

What do you guys think the rarity is of each player and therefore the difficulty of finding a specific player in the set?

While I'm always looking to cross of something on my Jersey City player checklist, I still need the T215 Pirate back of Purtell and IF I ever see it I'm hoping I'll be able to afford it at the time.

I was lucky enough to snag the Red Cross back of the same in an SGC 10 holder about a year ago and couldn't believe my luck.

The t215 Pirate is much more tough than the Red Cross but still possible and probably at least 10k maybe 25k plus

smtjoy 11-15-2009 08:01 PM

One thing I noticed is the Type 1's seem to have much more back damage than they type 2's.

Thanks Jim, hopefully I will see it twice then, once to let me know it exists and then a second time much much later when I'll be able to afford it. :)

Do you think there are general a few copies of popular players and maybe 1 - 2 copies of players like Purtell? Am I basically hoping to get a unique card some day?
