Question on dating a photograph

2 Attachment(s)
The attached photograph has no year stamping on it's reverse.

It does, however, have a day (July 13).

Does anyone know how I can go about determining games played on July 13 at the Polo Grounds between, say, 1920 and 1925? An online resource, database that I don't know of?

I'd really like to pin this one down.

(BTW - visiting team uniforms too difficult to identify - will try a higher res scan)

The Yankees played in the polo grounds from 1913 - 1922. Ruth was on the Yankees starting in 1920, and the Yankees played the Giants in the WS in 1921, 22 and 23. Since it's a July date, that rules out the world series so It should be either 1920, 21 or 22.

went on to baseball almanac sight and found that the Yankees played at polo grounds July 13, 1920 against the Browns, July 13 1921 they were away at St. Louis and they didn't play on July 13 1922, so I would say it was from 1920...best guess.

I agree its probably 1920.

A newspaper article about the game has the attendance at 38,823 and it also said Babe Ruth struck out 5 times in 8 at bats in the doubleheader.

Babe hit .266 that day then?.. Not too flabby

if his other 3 ABs were hits of course

Thanks!

Wow you guys are great - thanks for the quick response.

Bob - what newspaper article, if I may ask?

bobw 11-11-2009 12:46 PM

He walked twice and singled his other 3 ABs

Here's the article:

Thanks again, guys.

Bob - I'd love to know what service you use to find those articles. Would go a long way to helping me date and learn about many others.
