Goodwin proof?? Opinions please...
 

All,
I know there's been discussion on these once before, but I couldn't find the thread in the archives. I'd like to re-visit if I could. Does anyone know of any background on these?
Measures 4" x 6-1/4" and is mounted on cardboard. I have included a scan of the frame the piece was found in and side view of the item as well. Per VCP under the N172 search
it does list the Boyd card, (Boyd Chicago Maroons- bat at Ready) but it has no history or picture of the card. Has anyone seen this pose of Boyd on an N172?
Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Tony

Hello Tony,

That is a known pose of Boyd, 34-3, Bat at ready. I suspect the photo originates from the Vermont find. It is believed the Vermont Find photos were developed post-1900 from the original glass plate negatives and includes many of the tougher players (including Boyd). Nice photo.

Hi Tony- this looks like one of those later prints made from that find of glass negatives. That's my guess.

Interesting. That would make sense. The seller I obtained it from resides in Vermont. So if it's post 1900 has there been an actual date assigned to these of when they're actually from, and how many were included in the original Vermont find? I'd love to see pic's of others if anyone knows of any. Past auctions, privately owned, etc.

This one of Abner Boyce, known pose 33-3, is somewhat similar. It is not however affixed to a cardboard backing.

Nobody really knows when they were made. It's possible that not all were printed at the same time.

Dating of Goodwin "proofs"
 

It's interesting that REA seems to have taken only part of the mailing envelope into account when trying to date the Doran image in their 2005 lot #122. Even assuming their dating of the photographer's address is correct, the stamps on the envelope were last issued in 1887. Figuring that the photographer had bought out some other company's inventory, including some 15-year-old stamps, it's much more reasonable to think that the envelope was mailed early in their residence at the address indicated--which would narrow the window even further, pushing it toward the 1902 end of the 1902-to-late teens period.

I believe REA didn't want to rely entirely on an envelope to date the photos, which may be why they don't use it as gospel in and of itself. I had earlier looked at some of the photos for a different auction house, and later was asked by REA if there was anything physically that would prevent them from being from the early 1900s frame, and I said no (They clearly weren't from the 1800s, though). So REA assigned them to the early 1900s time frame, and that seemed reasonable to me having examined photos in person and knowing the envelope supported this. For the first auction house, I was simply asked if they were original proofs/photos from the 1800s, and I said no. I wasn't asked anything beyond that and they didn't include them in their auction.
