Great find

I purchesed these two great rarities as well as a Hess Newsboy and 17 Old Judges from an estate dealer who literally pulled these out of the trash. Unbelievable.

Gary and I were chatting yesterday about his good fortune...couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. And those two California League cards are monsters! Gary- could you put up the Newboy and a couple of the nicer OJ's?:)

Hi Gary

Hi Gary
I was speaking with Barry on the phone (just now) and he told me of your great find. WOW...congratulations. I love it when good guys get good finds and deals. Those are some fantastic cards and one of the types I never did get to acquire when I was still doing 19th Century collecting. best regards

Exhibitman 10-18-2009 08:16 AM

Fantastic! Please post some more!

Jay Wolt 10-18-2009 08:16 AM

Unbelievable!

Gary:

It's every 19th century collector's dream (well, mine anyway) that they'll stumble across a cache of undiscovered material. Hearty congratulations!

Now you need to put a video on You Tube and fill us in on all the dumpster diving details! :D

Unbelieveable!!! What a great score. Congrats Gary! :)

I too would love to see pics of the rest of the stuff.

This kind of stuff is still out there....there really are people who still don't know that old baseball cards and memorabilia is worth $$$. My brother has a friend who's friend bought an old house in Vancouver, WA a month or so back that was filled with antiques and junk...in that junk was a box filled with tobacco cards...my brother has been trying to get details on the find, but he lives on the other side of the state and he doesn't personally know the guy.

Here is the Newsboy and a few OJs. There were no HOFers or scarce OJs, but the condition of some is quite nice. Most are 1889 issue with about six being pink, as can be seen with the Williamson.

caramelcard 10-18-2009 11:57 AM

Unbelievable!! That's awesome Gary! Enjoy them.

barrysloate 10-18-2009 12:03 PM

Gary- you will get some very good grades with those. The Lauer looks particularly sharp.

Gary- congrats! Did you have to bid on the cards or did you purchase them directly from the estate representative? Did you stumble upon them or did you have an idea that there were some old cards in the estate? Please share the story with us

I had had prior dealings with the people emptying the house. An elderly woman in her 90s had lived there until recently passing. I simply was contacted to look at the cards and bought them on the spot. I'm located in western NY about 40 miles south of Rochester. Since the Hess cards were produced in Rochester, I guess I was geographically in the right place at the right time. Strange subplot: I have recently given up my land line and have only a cell phone. It took about 2 weeks for the estate people to contact me through a third party. I could have missed out altogether.

Is the McGinty a new N338-1 ? How many N338-1s have been catalogued to date, 18 ? Congratulations and thanks for sharing. I've always like the Nicol & Reilly OJ pose. Don't hold back, share the other dozen OJs.

ethicsprof 10-18-2009 05:17 PM

Wow!!

congrats!!!!
an incredible find with an amazing story!

best,

barry

Joe--The two player card is not a new card. I owned the same card about ten years ago (got it from Rob Lifson).

barrysloate 10-18-2009 06:34 PM

Jay- I still have the color photocopy you sent me of that McGinty.
