1880's George Wood's: Two Old Cards...Help Identify !
 

Hi all....I am a collector who favor's the 1950's and 1960's Cards ( Being that I grew up in the 50's & 60's )! So, please forgive me if I do not know my late 1800's baseball....

I have these 2 cards. They each measure ( Approx. 2 1/8" x 3 1/8"+ )
Blank Backs...Although the back of cards are darker than the image shows below.

Any ideas on who produced these 2 old relics?

They are photos used for Kalamazoo Bats, but what you have look like some later reprint.

They've got that dipped in something look...artificially aged. Fakes probably.

They do have a sort of pink hue to them....Although it would be hard for anyone to look at a picture and say a card is dipped into something.

Unless of course, that is your professional opinion !

The consensus...on multiple boards...is the cards are reproductions...of which I agree.

To answer your question, no idea who made those. I agree with Barry, Dan, and our good Dentist, they look like they've been made within the last 30 years, to me.

I hear my own echoes... but I'll ask. Do you have a black light? If not, buy one on eBay, $8 to $12 usually. Then, illuminate those bad boys with uv light. Paper made shortly after World War II, and thereafter, is usually made with brighteners that fluoresce when illuminated with black light. These guys will probably glow. It is an easy way to discern many of the reprints of old stuff... One glowing card that you were about to buy will easily pay for the black light.

The originals are real photos glued to cabinet mounts like N173 cards. These are all paper so they are absolutely not authentic. Plus, they are way too small to be the originals. No need to do anymore research or investigation. I seem to remember these on ebay and if that is the case, maybe you can contact the seller and try to get a refund.

Comparing the Kalamazoo with the above photo they must have taken the photo from something else because the above photo shows more of the background than the kalamazoo.

The photos are the K-Bat cabinets (or that is what some people call them), by Charles Gross. They probably got the images from the net from the NY Public Library site to make the fakes.
