Hello,
I thought you button guys may like this one. I've seen the Giants one but until I got lucky and stumbled onto this, had never seen the Yankees variation... <a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z228/andypcl/?action=view¤t=yankees5.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z228/andypcl/yankees5.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> |

October Pickups
I picked up this 1896 Baltimore Orioles cabinet photo this past weekend. John McGraw and Wee Willie Keeler are lounging in the forefront, with Hughie Jennings at the far right in the row of seated players. Legendary sold the same image, but in postcard format, in one of their last catalog auctions.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...lesCabinet.jpg |
I saw the Baltimore Cabinet on the Phila, PA Auction website. What did it end up going for? I was thinking of attending the auction in person but the Baltimore Cabinet was the only item of real interest to me and I didn't really need it for my collection.
|
Baltimore Cabinet
I just sent you an email regarding the Baltimore Cabinet. I go to that auction house alot, and usually when they have sports stuff, it is mostly modern junk, but they had some decent stuff this time. The only thing I had major interest in was the Baltimore photo, but did pickup a group of BF3 pennants, and another older baseball photo that I think is a seminary team.

It's getting tough to find vintage Reds Pennants I don't already have, so I was thrilled to come upon this one last week.
Never seen another in 20 years of collecting these... and a World Chamnpion Season for the Reds, no less! Also picked up this LaJoie Scorer from Mears... nice condition for this little toughie. Having the original leather band in tact was another plus. I've been an under-bidder about half a dozen times until now... |
Nice pick-ups Mark. The Lajoie is very nice!

Just got this one in the mail. Vintage original TYPE I photograph of Roger Maris hitting his 60th...

Jimmy,

VMI football pickups
My dad had a nice little find of early VMI sports items at an estate sale this past weekend. The group included 2 football sweaters, 1 with Thirty Seven embroidered into it, a trophy ball from a 1937 football game between VMI and South Carolina, 2 early Goldsmith soccer balls (1 looks nearly unused), an early Reach Glove, 3 early field hockey sticks, an early hockey stick, and the last item we are not really sure what it is, it is about a 6 foot long staff with arrow shaped top that has a pennant with felt lettering reading PILOT on it. Since VMI is a military school, my dad's guess was that this was used as a parade flag?
Anyone have any ideas about the age of the Reach glove? Also what would you call this type of glove? thanks Keith http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...c/vmigroup.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n.../vmiglove1.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n.../vmiglove2.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n.../vmisoccer.jpg http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...c/vmipilot.jpg |
Keith, you and your dad sure have a knack for finding great stuff.
That Reach mitt looks like a childs basemitt. I'm not positive, but the soccer balls actually look like they might be volleyballs. Someone with a Goldsmith sporting goods catalog might be able to pinpoint it. My guess is that the 4V model number refers to volleyball. |
VMI items
Thanks William. Good point on the soccer/volleyballs. The 4V probably does point in that direction.

The Naps pennant is a previous pickup, but it came back from the framer's last week. The person who framed the other pennant pictured did this one, too, and the only thing different is the color of the mat. The dimensions and type of frame are the same, and because these are the only two of my Indians/Naps pennants that are framed, they complement each other well.
|
They look terrific Rob. Congrats on two of your many amazing pieces including the pennant you picked up a couple nights ago! Never seen one before.
|
Killer pennants Rob!

Woodcut
Nice Woodcut, but it looks like Becket mispelled his name on the label.
|
Thanks, that spelling is actually how it appeared in the newspaper. For some reason, Murnane's name is mispelled about ten times more often than it was spelled correctly within print media of that time period.

The Catch
1 Attachment(s)
Purchased this from my best friend who is consolidating his collection. The story of the catch is well known and what I like about this one is that it's colorized which gives it a vintage feel. My buddy had the 16x20 signed by Mays and took it with him to Arizona to a framer that does really good work. Turns out that the other part of the story that isn't as well known is that Joe Garagiola is the bald headed guy that can be seen in one of the centerfield windows (he had been traded to the Giants during the last month of the season but didn't make the WS roster). Joe lives in Arizona and turns out to be a friend of our framer. He was nice enough to get is signed by him (hard to see in this picture but he's drawn an arrow in silver sharpie and under it he signed "that's me, Joe Garagiola".
I haven't seen too many of these around. |
Im not a fan of Mays, but love that Polo Grounds litho.
This gamble., A cheap, *cringe* laminated photo of Ruth pitching in '33, may actually be a type1. However, Murphy's Law will determine that it's an old White Castle placemat. http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...209TL9404A.jpg |
Steve...
Regardless of what that turns out to be, it's an incredible and stunning image... congrats! |
