And this Cardinals program is really special to me: it was bought by my grandfather at the 1934 World Series!
One of Dizzy Dean's cousins lived across the street from the family home in Okemah, Oklahoma. When the Cardinals made the Series, Grandpa took the train to St. Louis to see a game. As far as we know, it was the only big-league game he ever saw. He was a devoted fan by radio and newspaper, however. He brought back his program and three souvenir bats for my dad and his brothers. I only have two of the bats: a Pepper Martin and a Paul Dean. Someday, my sons will hopefully treasure them as I do. http://s915.photobucket.com/albums/a...RENCEPAYNE.jpg |

Wow Rick I love the story about the "34 program...My apologies for the large pics I don't post here much but here's one of the "wild horse of the osage" signed while he was a minor league manager in Florida....Right around the time he was suspended for choking an umpire!

Sportman's Park June 7, 1941;
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c3...nyy11slb7B.jpg |
On June 7, 1941 the Yanks scored five runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Browns, 11-7 at Sportsman's Park. King Kong Keller hit a grand slam in the third. Dimaggio went three-for-five, thus hitting safely in 22 consecutive games to that date. I think it is a terrific photo. I'd have loved to have been the fan in the aloha shirt and Panama hat with a front row seat for that dogfight. I particularly like the way your photo matches up with my postcard, at least for range and windage. It's like one of those kids' puzzles, how many differences can you find?
Here is a link to the NYT article about the game: http://tinyurl.com/l6yuen It's in pdf format and it's the first time I have tried to upload a pdf file to my ImageEvent site, but I think it should open OK. |
Hope the thread isnt considered hijacked.
Thanks for that link. Always thought these were game 26 of the streak. |

Awesome stuff, guys. I have a few vintage autos that I can post later. I know this is a vintage thread/forum, but I don't think you Cardinals fans will mind this, since he is already an all-time great. I have had these for 3 years, and they are keepers. These are game used from early 2006.
