Nebraska Indians advertisement
Interesting ad I found where Guy Green is advertising for players for his Nebraska Indians team. He says at the bottom of the ad that he will give a free 4 color team postcard to anyone who gives him a lead on a player...I imagine it must have been this postcard.

Actually I figured out how to embed it, but it's kind of small.

"Absolutely sober and gentlemanly both on and off the field"... guess this would rule out many of today's best players!
Seriously... I can't imagine a time when a free postcard was enough of an incentive for anyone to provide viable leads on a potential player. Nowadays of course, this rare vintage postcard is stunning... but back in the day, seems like very little payoff for lots of effort! |
Great piece, Dan!
Can you identify the tribe that blonde-headed fellow on the front row hails from? ;) |

1912 Nebraska Indians Postcard
wondering if Guy Green's "free postcard" offer was still on the table in 1912-1913, and whether any of the players depicted on this postcard were a direct result of the solicited "leads".

Nice postcard btw...do you collect the Nebraska Indians? edited to add: That I believe that Jesse Youngdeer is pictured on your postcard. He was a teammate of Jim Thorpe at Carlisle ...he was a big star in those days so he may be the fellow on the bench with the blanket around him. |
thanks for the historical info regarding the Indians' ownership.
I don't collect the Nebraska Indians specifically, but I do have one or two other postcards featuring them as well as the posted example, which happens to be one of my personal favorites amongst the many postcards I've acquired over the years. |

haven't been on here in quite a while, but finally got around to digging out the two other Green's Nebraska Indians postcards I have, plus two of Beltzer's teams...the photo postcard ("Beltzer's Oxford Indians") features a message that mentions playing in Indiana, as well as a reference to "white men" (players). |
Wow! Very cool...as you can see from my sig file that 1914 Beltzer's postcard is one that I've been looking for. If you're ever interested in parting with it let me know. And in case you didn't know the postcard with the lone player on the front pictures Dan Tobey. I've seen the Oxford postcard before too, but got outbid on ebay years ago for it...that was Oxford, NE and some of those guys are only pretending to be Indians.
Thanks for sharing! :) |
thanks Dan - I was under the impression that's Dan Tobey, but confirmation is always useful as well!
both the Oxford and the 1914 Beltzer's were purchased (separately) in the past year or so and - while pricey - were certainly worth it, as they're great images! IF I happen to ever decide to part with (or otherwise run across another example of either one), I'll definitely get in touch with you. D.S. Quote:

Thank you for showing off some beauties. It's always fun for me to chat with others who collect the Nebraska Indians postcards...there are very few of us. :)
