In the wake of what happened last night to David Wright of the Mets and Hiroki Kuroda of the Dodgers, it's kind of odd that today marks the 89th anniversary of the death of Ray Chapman.

According to The Associated Press archive, on Aug. 16, 1920, Chapman batted second in Cleveland's lineup. In his first two at-bats he got two hits – each a double. He also stole two bases, scored two runs, made two put-outs, two assists and two errors. In two unofficial times at bat, he was struck twice by pitches. The second one killed him.

Cue Twilight Zone theme music ...

CAT scan of Wright's head/brain were negative as of this morning. Kuroda's Cat Scan also negetive as of this morning also. Both are pretty lucky, thanks to the baseball gods.

Ian Kinsler also got beaned in the helmet late in last night's Rangers/ RedSox game.

When Yogi Berra was beaned in Detroit, the papers reported: "Xray pictures of Berra's head showed nothing."

Wasn't that same line used on Dizzy Dean 20 years earlier?

And the Dodgers' Hiroki Kuroda also took a line drive off his head from a batted ball, and he of course wasn't wearing a helmet. What the heck was going on yesterday?

I believe Diz' said that about his own x-rays.

Crazy weekend. Glad all the players were "okay". Wright's really looked pretty bad. Thank goodness for helmets.

I heard a rumor that doctors were concerned about Wright because during the neurological tests, they asked him to name the Mets' starting Shortstop, Centerfielder and First baseman. He was unable to answer.

They felt better when they found out that none of the other Mets knew those guys either.

Always interesting to me that both Chapman and Mays were Kentucky boys and both born in 1891. Ray Chapman was born in McHenry Ky. near Beaver Dam and Carl Mays was born in Liberty, Ky.
