I need a blacklight for cards.
 

Who or where and what kind do I get. I want to get more into detecting bad cards so I don't sell something or send something that has been manipulated. I have been looking more closly at cards I have and am picking up possible alteration on one of my nicer HOF'er 206's. Will a blacklight help detect trimming and stuff??????

Believe it or not, a good place to purchase a blacklight is Party City on the day after Halloween. If you can scope-out a store with excess inventory and be there the morning after Halloween, you will find them 60% to 75% off. You might have to elbow a few mom's in the process, but keep in mind you are doing this in the name of science.

eBay search "black light" and you'll hit on some that are $10.50 to $8.99, with shipping. Might be better deals, I didn't look for long.

Every vintage collector NEEDS a black light. And those that think they don't probably have the greater need.

All the black lights give off the same light, it's just they come in different styles. The above linked guide pictures three popular styles, all which I own. The first two flashlight styles are the best for collectors. My personal favorite it is the little LED flashlight style, but as long as it's a UV black light it will give off the light you need. The reason I don't recommend the light bulb to card collectors is a plugged in lamp isn't as convenient or portable and doesn't direct the light like a flashlight. The bulb would work, it wouldn't be a waste of money, but it's really meant for stuff like fluorescent posters and Halloween decorations. The reason the bulb is pictured is part of the guide shows how to make glow in the dark art and crafts.

Exactly what I did. I have a desk lamp with a black light from Lowe's. Probably cost me $5.

If anyone's interested I have an in print book that is a beginner's guide to using forensic light. It includes the black light in the online guide, but also covers shortwave ultraviolet light, infrared light and visible light techniques. The books is for total beginners, and shows how the light is used in everything from collecting to art to detective work to currency authentication. I think kids would enjoy doing the stuff as much as adults.
