Wanted: Several 1936-37 Exhibit 4/1's...
I'm looking for color variations of the 1936 and 1937 Exhibit 4/1's. According to the SCD Standard Catalog, the 1936's come in green and slate blue while the 1937's come in green and bright blue. I'm looking for examples of each color from both sets. The examples can come from the following group of cards. I'm looking for cards in no better than VG condition. Please email me at brad_green@cox.net if you can help me.
1936: Andrews, Clift, Hemsley, West Appling, Bonura, Dykes, Lyons Averill, Harder, Trosky, Vosmik Berger, MacFayden, Urbanski, Whitney Berry, Higgins, Johnson, Puccinelli Bluege, Myer, Newsom, Whitehill Bordagaray, Brandt, Lindstrom, Mungo Bush, Traynor, Vaughan, Wanter Camilli, Davis, Moore, Wilson Derringer, Herman, Kampouris, Lombardi Galan, Hartnett, Herman, Warneke Hubbell, Mancuso, Ott, Terry 1937: Appling, Bonura, Dykes, Kennedy Berger, Lopez, MacFayden, Urbanski Blanton, Suhr, Vaughan, Waner Camilli, Moore, Walters, Whitney Clift, Hemsley, Hildebrand, West Derringer, Lombardi, Riggs, Weintraub English, Moore, Mungo, Phelps Galan, Hartnett, Herman, Lee Hubbell, Leslie, Mancuso, Ott Johnson, Kelly, Moses, Werber Kuhel, Meyer, Newsom, Stone |
From what I have seen with my 1937 exhibits they are all the same color.
My 1936 do have the two colors listed but it is only a slight difference- Blue http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...onnl-sgc30.jpg Green http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...etroital40.jpg |
Grove...
Scott:
The problem I'm having is that both the 1936 and 1937 Exhibit 4/1's with Grove have Grove, Cronin, Foxx and Ferrell. The color is the only way to tell the 1936 from the 1937. I'm hoping to grab the two different colors from each year and put them side by side with my Grove cards so I can figure out what I have. Brad |
Brad If you want, post up scans of them and I will take a look and see if I can help. I have a near set of both years I can compare them to.
IMO I think SCD is wrong for the 37's, I have owned many of them and they have always been the same color green/black, the mistake that does get made is on the teams that have the same cards both years and they get mixed up and think a blue 1936 is really a 1937. |
Grove cards...
Scott:
Thanks for your help! Here are two of my 1936 or 1937's. I may have another one... I'll look tonight... http://www.bandkgreen.net/lefty_grov...lors_net54.jpg |
The left is a blue 36, the right a 37.
Here is a green 36- http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...tonalgrove.jpg |
One more...
Scott:
I found the third card a few minutes ago... Please check out the scan below... According to your earlier post, the card in the middle is the blue 1936 and the card on the right is the 1937. What year is the card on the left? (It appears to be about the same color as the one in the middle...) Is there any correlation between the location of the "PTD. IN U.S.A." stamp on the bottom and the year? Based on the ones that have been posted thus far, it seems as though the stamp is in the bottom middle for the 1936's and off-centered for the 1937. Thanks again for your help! http://www.bandkgreen.net/lefty_grov...hree_net54.jpg |
Hey Brad, your third card is another 1936 blue.
I just checked all my 36-37 for the location of the stamp, all 17 1936 that I have are centered, I have 4 37 that are not centered but 14 more that are centered. The 4 that are not centered are like yours with the stamp to the left. Looks to be some kind of printing variation. Here is one of mine- http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...37exnyal40.jpg |
Scott:
Thanks again for your help... Here's another question out of curiosity... Of the four 1937's that you have that have the off-centered stamp, do all four players on those cards also appear together on the 1936 version? Perhaps the Exhibit Supply Company printed the stamp off-centered on the 1937's with the same players as the 1936's so we could tell the difference between them... :) |
The 1937 NY example I posted above has Dimaggio vs the 1936 that has Ruffing instead so not the case. Nice idea thou it would have been nice if that was a way to tell them apart.

1937 Grove...
Scott:
For your 1937 Grove, is the "PTD. IN U.S.A" stamp centered or off-centered? Brad |
