I took this photo today of that same trophy at the hall of fame.
Also is there any way to find the whole version of the speech or is there just the small clips. |

Lou's smiling face greets me every morning

Signed photo taken before his 2000th consecutive game. ("Mimmie," who the photo is inscribed to, was Pitzy Katz' daughter. Katz was an entertainer who used to often visit the Gehrigs after Lou's retirement to help cheer him. The Gehrig letters recently posted talk quite a bit about Katz.)

Any clue what this photo might be worth (minus the signature)? I am under the impression that it is a period copy of the original image. It's 8X10, on heavy matte stock. No markings on verso. |

Terrific stuff everyone. Keep posting everything Gehrig.
These "trophy" photos were taken for a Look magazine article in 1940. Attachment 2624Attachment 2625 Although I did post this telegram in an earlier thread, I think it warrants a post here as well... Attachment 2626 |
Not my photo, found it on the Web, but a nice picture of Gehrig and his wife Eleanor Twitchell.

it's hard to read this, and not get a lump in your throat...
"Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans. "Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career just to associate with them for even one day? Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert? Also, the builder of baseball's greatest empire, Ed Barrow? To have spent six years with that wonderful little fellow, Miller Huggins? Then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology, the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy? Sure, I'm lucky. "When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift - that's something. When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies - that's something. When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles with her own daughter - that's something. When you have a father and a mother who work all their lives so you can have an education and build your body - it's a blessing. When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed - that's the finest I know. "So I close in saying that I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for." -Lou Gehrig July 4, 1939 |

I dont generally post much on these types of threads because not much of my collection is scanned. I have maybe 20-25 significant Gehrig photos but here are a few that have not been shown that are some of my favorites. They will all be at the National. Gehrig was perhaps the coolest guy in all of sports. A wholesome family man who was an amazing athlete and an even more amazing person. Hope you guys like them.

1937 Babe Ruth's All-American Baseball Team. One of just a handful of images ever taken of Gehrig, Ruth, and DiMaggio together. Original vintage TYPE I photograph. |
I LOVE that image, Jimmy. Not only are Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio in the mix, but my boy Hubbell is too! Was this taken at any point before the '37 World Series? The background looks like the Polo Grounds to me...
|
Yep. The '37 Series it is Graig. At the Polo Grounds (Yanks Road Uniform)

Now that would make a wonderful Kreindler masterpiece! Best, Jimmy |

A couple of cool Gehrig items I forgot about from Ed Barrows estate. First is a poignant handwritten letter to Ed Barrow from Lou's famous mother talking about her fond memories of Ed and thanking him for a Jubilee that was done in his honor. Second is a autograph sheet from Barrows estate signed by Lou's Wife very shortly after the death of Gehrig. Last is the only item I know of which is signed both by Lou's wife Eleanor and also by Paul Krichell the famous scout who signed Lou Gehrig.
Rhys |
Looks like Eleanor also signed on behalf of her mother on the first sheet.
|
Jodi
Good catch, I did not even know Eleanors maiden name was Twitchell until I read your post but that is pretty cool. The wife and the Mother in law on the same sheet even if the Mother signature is "secretarial". I am not aware of the event since nothing in the notebook of signatures had a date. Thanks for that info. Rhys |
I started collecting because what i read about Lou. He is the main focus of my collection. The autographed 1934 goudey set I started was because it was "Lou Gehrig Says." I don't have most of the items scanned, but I found a few things that were handy. Hope you enjoy.

He didn't play, but is still on the active roster. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2.../Always001.jpg Sheet music for theme song from Pride of the Yankees movie. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...JAPprog001.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...JAPprog002.jpg Front and back of Japanese program from POY movie. Entire book is in Japanese. Date on back of book is 1949. I think the movie was released that year in Japan. I tried to edit pics to get closer, but I don't seem to be able to. If you want to seem these closer up use one of the Photobucket links below and look in folder "Lou" |

It's good to know there are several other die-hard Gehrig fans here - just curious how many of you will be at the National and at the Net54 Dinner? Leon should give us a Gehrig Table!
I've decided to start taking pictures and scans of my Gehrig collection so I can start posting as well soon. Too swamped at the moment with National preparations, but I'll try to get some up here. I already arranged to pick up 2 new Gehrig purchases at the NSCC - a 1926-29 Exhibits Postcard Back, and a 1928 W502 Blank Back. |
Hey all,
Anyone know a few good sources of images for Gehrig? In particular, I'm looking for a few shots from the retirement speech (especially a good scan of Lou holding his hat with his arms in front of him, looking down at the ground)? I'm commissioning a sketch card from an artist and want an image similar to that. Thanks! Mark |
