pardon the card
There are very few times that this particular card is so relevent so pardon the interruption with a "card". This Sports Co. of America Ruth is fairly common by normal standards, a bit scarce but still can be found. The reason this is probably 100x more rare is that it has a copyright of 1927 instead of the normal (for this series) 1926 copyright date. You can see it on the lower left of the back. I can only think of one series (E126), besides maybe a strip card, that was produced with Ruth in 1927. So here is his 1927 (only 2-3 known) Sports Co of America card...

Here is a 1927 New York Chauffeur's license. Sources close to me say it was worn by a cab driver who picked up Babe Ruth and four of his girlfriends after a World Series game for a night on the town, then took Gehrig and his Mom out to dinner the next night, then drove Lazzeri and his wife to a party, and probably kept all the team unis in the trunk. In fact, this was probably pinned to the Babe's jersey and worn by the cabby to show off to his buddies and scam free beer. So when you think about it, this is some very serious collecting hardware. Any 1927 Yanks collection that is missing this piece has a significant hole that must cause hours of restless sleep. Despite all this historical significance, I am going to ALLOW the first person who emails me to steal it from my collection for $40 and GIVE them an opportunity to complete an otherwise shell of a collection:eek:. I'm a giver, that's how I role...that and I need a little more cash to buy something that pales in comparison at the National.:D

This is one of my favorite Yankees photos--you really get to see just how tiny Miller Huggins was. It dates to 1927 and was sold in the Heritage Auctions May 2007 Signature Auction:

1927 RUTH AND GEHRIG TYPE 1 PHOTO
http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/a...ehrig_ruth.jpg This was the first time I spent over 3k for anything other than an automobile or a house. I purchased this in Henry Yee's Ebay Auction in 2008. I am very happy I added this to my collection. |

Now I know your sitting on a bunch of tremendous TYPE I photos Ben... Let's see em! I've posted plenty of different threads over the last several months and I'm sure you have photos that fit into just about everyone of them. Bring em Dude. |

Ok Jimmy...you asked for it man;)
This one below I just love. Obviously, I would rather have one without every player's name written in ink but man..history rules. This image is just fantastic..crystal clear. I bought this for 35 dollars; (1%) of the what I spent for the Ruth/Gehrig image below. I like them equally as well with the price factored in. This just shows that one does not have to sell the farm to enjoy this fantastic hobby(own something virtually impossible to find even with unlimited resources). "All you need is love". http://i947.photobucket.com/albums/a.../1927yanks.jpg |
Wait a sec...
You've got yourself two Grabowskis there, Ben.

Technically originating from 1926, but close enough.
The scan does the actual photo no justice...the photo is crystal clear. I'll try to get a better scan in here. Combs, the Bam, and Meusel. Long Bob looking as surly and disinterested as ever... |
That shot's KILLER jacksons. Wonderful pick-up.

OK so it isn't 27 Yankees, but its close
1929 Penn State Band photo at Yankee Stadium signed by a few guys you've probably heard of. Sigs of modern guys added later, but likely vintage to around when they were playing/managing(Durocher).

Mark, That's a unique shot. Beautius! I get UV glass from our local craft store. It's a bit more but worth it.

Steve,
Thanks. I wish I knew the story behind the pic and who got them to sign it to the band, etc. Unfortunately, I bought it so long ago, the story is likely lost. It was the top of the line UV glass. Unfortunately, not unbreakable. Your pic should be used for the Jan edition of What's my caption. Jimmy usually posts it. I could think up a few lines. |

This is probably my favorite photo of Ruth and Gehrig. It came through Heritage as part of the Casey Stengel Collection.

Jonathan - KILLER shot. The expression on Gehrig's face is priceless. And what a memento for that child as she grew up (that is, if she knew about the photograph)!
